Newquay, tips for a day out on the train?

Just about to book a flight from Manchester for a few days in April - not Easter hols! Thinking of using the branch line, so is there a get on/off day ticket, and is there anything worth seeing/doing around the stations? Note, I like cozy pubs and not-too severe walks, and little friendly cafes for a brew and cake.

There's 2: Cornwall Day Ranger at £15 or
Ride Cornwall at £18 (no railcard discounts, it's a bus company product and valid on bus as well as rail).
Both valid throughout the county.
For a round trip only, I would go through to Lostwithiel on the main line, it's a small historic town. £7.50 return. Or via Liskeard to Looe for £8.90.

Someone may know if there's a walk through the scenic Luxulyan valley area.

Sadly, the semaphores at Par and Lostwithiel will have gone by then.

There is a footpath which keeps close company with the railway from Luxulyan down to St. Blazey - from there you need walk along the streets to reach Par station. The highlight is the Treffry Viaduct (which you cross) - the original route of the Cornwall Minerals Rly to Newquay. Walks from Newquay itself include the SW Coast Path, going north or south - there are parallel bus routes to take you back to Newquay when you have had enough. As it is Cornwall, there are a lot of ups and downs!
