Newport Gwent - Gloucester "Any Permitted"

Good morning folks,

My work takes me from Newport to either Swindon or Gloucester. I am wondering whether a Newport Gwent - Gloucester ticket with "any permitted" route is valid if I were to use it between Swindon and Newport. There are two distinct routes there, one through the Severn Tunnel, and one the long way round.

I have had a look at the routing guide but would appreciate your input!

Officially no, as the ticket is to gloucester and Swindon is on the GWML. But you could get away with it by saying you are proceeding on to Gloucester from Swindon by changing at Swindon.

Personally i'd just get the right ticket as it would same any unnecessary hassle.

Mojo is right. You can not use a Newport Gwent - Gloucester ticket via Swindon.

On the other hand, map LW shows that you can use a Newport Gwent - Swindon ticket via Gloucester.

Well I wondered myself once on this subject, when back in 2004 I bought a Swansea to Gloucester SuperSaver Return (that sounds odd now!). Rather expensive I thought then, let alone now, but when I got it it read Route Not Swindon. I recall immediately thinking "Who on Earth would go via Swindon?!", this being before I became a track basher or even any sort of basher. These days I'd welcome the chance to do such a route!

you could use it via bpw no problem but not via swindon, I am almost sure you will face a penalty charge trying to do that.

i've done newport to cheltenham via temple meads before with no problems. Perfectly valid to do it that way I believe, can't see why not.

i've done newport to cheltenham via temple meads before with no problems. Perfectly valid to do it that way I believe, can't see why not.

It's allowed because of the group stations rule, meaning you can double back.

Much like Taunton - Bristol Parkway is valid via Westbury AND Newport
