Newhaven Marine

I just read that a parliamentary non-timetabled train (1852 Newhaven Marine - Lewes) still ran from this station daily in early 2009. Is this still the case?

As far as I am aware, there hasn't been a rail service to/from Newhaven Marine since August 2006.

The local MP asked a series of questions (recorded in Hansard) to this effect last year.

Paul Clark: Newhaven Marine station is owned by Network Rail and as such it is up to them to review options for the future of the station. If Network Rail were to conclude they wished to close this station they would be required to follow the procedures under the Railways Act 2005, including a full consultation.

I believe the parliamentary service may still run, but as an empty stock working. Passengers have a choice of using a free taxi or walking to Newhaven Harbour which is said to be a three minute walk but would actually take most people half that time. The distance is no longer than the walk from platform 6 to the concourse at Marylebone!

Newhaven Marine brings back memories, in the 60s I recall the night ferry arriving at Victoria, all Wagon Lits sleeping cars, this train was Paris,Dieppe
ferry to Newhaven Marine then on to Victoria. Then return in the Evening to Paris.

Last time I looked (last year) there was a Southern poster up at Marine, inviting intending travellers to use Harbour, or call for assistance if required.

Harbour is itself poorly used, as foot passengers for the ferry are now directed to Newhaven Town station, where a courtesy bus runs them from the terminal onto the ship. Therefore, Harbour serves the few houses in the vicinity, some business units and that's it.

Yes, I had a visit last year and noticed the poster. I did note that the rail in the platform was shiny, so obviously still used. The Network Southeast station name boards were still up, as were the signs on the walls directing folk to left luggage, ticket office etc - all long closed.


I believe the station is still technically open, although it is often simply considered part of Harbour station. I do note however that Newhaven Marine is still shown as a station on our Avantix machines at work, but when you look for fares it just says "no fares found". I believe it still shows up on the Raileasy site and a few other booking engines.

I note the picture of the poster provided by RPM says that the replacement taxi is for valid rail ticket holders only - not sure how one is supposed to hold such a ticket if no TIS will issue them unless they have a Southern Daysave or other such ticket.

I could use it as I have a valid ticket for all stations outside London - It's a Go-Ahead staff pass!

So every weekday, they move an empty train into an empty station, thats never going to get used again from the sounds of things. What an absolute waste of time and resources. Wouldn't it be easier just to close it down.

Well, it's very difficult to shut a station down (Quite rightly IMO as making it easy might give people ideas about more useful stations) However, I do wonder whether there might be some way to reclassify it as a platform of Harbour station (which is just a stones throw away) so it could be taken out of use with relatively little fanfare. I wouldn't get too worried about it as it's so close to Harbour as to be little more than a headshunt as it is.

The Night Ferry went via Dover and Dunkirk, not Newhaven and Dieppe.

That's right; I don't think there was a rail ramp to load train ferries at Newhaven, was there?

The Newhaven Boat trains were regularly hauled by the three SR electric locos.

Those three rarely hauled any other passenger services, though I do have a photo of one on the Royal train at Woking.
