Newcastle to Saltburn : 4th February 2024

I want to book a day trip to Saltburn for early February, leaving Newcastle at 10:31

The NorthernRail website is showing this journey as follows..

10:31 Depart from Newcastle to Thornaby, arriving at 11:43
12:15 Depart from Thornaby to Saltburn, arriving at 12:51

I would rather spend the half-hour wait at Middlesbrough, just one stop further on than Thornaby, which the train goes to. Is this possible or do I HAVE to get off at Thornaby

Presume this is a Sunday journey, and that the 1031 from Newcastle (to Nunthorpe) will be calling at Middlesbrough after Thornaby, so don't see why changing at Middlesbrough (for the 1221 to Saltburn) shouldn't be possible if you're travelling on an Off Peak Day Return (normally routed via Hartlepool) which the 1031 from Newcastle does.

Answer might be different if you're on a route "AP Northern Only" advance ticket.

It'll be an advance ticket ... hopefully cheap in the NorthernRail sale next week

Probably not on the Northern site - it only offers "go via."

I would ask the conductor on the day.

Take it that an Advance Single (on the outward journey) from Newcastle to Middlesbrough then an Off Peak Single from Middlesbrough to Saltburn, wouldn't yield any overall savings?
