Looking at the VTEC website for the advance tickets released today for 13/5 and my usual 19:02 NCL-KGX is already £46 instead of the usual £28 or sometimes even £20. I know the prices are often higher in the case of reduced trains due to planned engineering but that is not the case. I managed to get the 17:49 for £28 but from the 18:00 onwards it is £46. I know Newcastle are playing Chelsea in the last match of the season but do TOCs normally take account of that sort of thing? Last Sunday was the Man Utd match and the tickets were normal prices and even after the Spurs match on the first day of the season.

That'll be why!

No, many TOCs normally don't (at least not at such an early stage).

Indeed, most TOCs are not as on the ball for this sort of thing as VTEC.

I thought that, but the OP is heading to London in the evening, when the Newcastle fans would be heading the other way after the game.

No, it's a home game so the Chelsea fans will be going home, but you'd be surprised how many Newcastle fans live/work in London as well.

Plus the trains will be packed as far as Durham/Darlington.

Trainsplit would have sold you tickets for this journey for £33.04

Tried that but they were only showing up to 11 May this morning. Must take a while to update after the new dates go live at 10:00
