Newcastle to Leeds fare advice please

Hi I was hoping someone could help on a cheap Newcastle NCL to Leeds for 2 people on the 29th November returning the same day. I've tried splitting at York but it still looks pricey - any help on splits available would be gratefully received

splitticketing.com suggests:

• NEWCASTLE to DARLINGTON OFF-PEAK DAY Return - £12.90 each
• DARLINGTON to NORTHALLERTON OFF-PEAK DAY Return - £5.50 each
• NORTHALLERTON to LEEDS OFF-PEAK DAY Return - £12.90 £21.10 each.

That's a total of £39.50 each for flexible return tickets. These must be used on trains which call at both Darlington and Northallerton, so they are best used on the direct TPE trains leaving Newcastle 5-10 past each hour and leaving Leeds 43-45 past each hour. Avoid the 0706 from Newcastle, which doesn't call at Northallerton.

If you intend to travel with the same person again within 12 months, it may be worth purchasing a Two Together Railcard. This costs £30 (or £27 if bought online) and gives 1/3rd off rail fares (except Mon-Fri 0430-0929) when the two people named on the card travel together.

The Two Together Railcard would reduce your total cost of travel on 29 November from £79.00 to £53.00. That would put £26.00 toward the cost of the Railcard, so if you chose the £27 online version you would only need to save £1 on one more journey before starting to make a profit from the Railcard.

I'm not quite sure I follow John@Home's arithmetic, but it seems hard to beat something in the range £30 to £33 each unless you take up his suggestion of a Two Together Railcard. [EDIT: his arithmetic's fine, it's just that his second £12.90 should be £21.10].

If you are happy to buy advance tickets, Newcastle-Leeds and Leeds-Newcastle Advances (avoiding very early in the morning) would start from a total of £66, and you might save a few pounds by splitting Advance tickets at Northallerton.

For non-Advances, trainscanbecheaper suggests day returns splitting at Hartlepool and Church Fenton for a total of about £60, but presumably an unacceptably long journey.

I'm using the app, why does it replace the pound sign??

Which app is that? I can see the pound symbol correctly in Tapatalk.

The forum app. Does it on mine too.

You can see them properly I.e. all the symbols in the OPs, but when you try to post the pound sign from the app it translates it into code.

Thanks for the advice, will go down the multiple returns for flexibility. I've not used the trains at all since living here and was unaware of the Darlington/northallerton split
