Newcastle to Lancaster

I see they've removed this anomaly and now the only permitted maps are HX+GP, whereas since about this time last year travel via Burnley and Manchester has been permitted. When did this happen? Have any other loopholes bitten the dust?

Just had a look at Routeings to Darlington and Northallerton, it appears they've also removed the little North Western (via Hellifield) - ie. Map XY. This seems a little mean as there's no fare anomaly and it's an entirley reasonable route given that via Manchester and via Burnley are also valid.

Do you mean that Darlington/Northallerton to Lancaster via Hellifield is no longer a mapped route? It remains a Permitted Route because it is the shortest route.

According to the Network Rail timetable, the shortest route from Darlington to Lancaster is 139.75 miles.

Via Hellifield is the shortest route though from Darlington-Lancaster, so remains valid under that rule.

North-East to Lancaster routes have always been a bit weird. As a teenager, before I knew anything of validity and back in the days when early NRE showed the quickest routes and not necessarily valid routes, I regularly travelled Durham-Barrow-in-Furness via Hellifield or Calder Valley, as these were often the fastest. The validity has been slowly eroded but I've used these routes since they were removed from the routeing guide and no-one has ever batted an eyelid: they're reasonable routes for many of the journeys.

It's difficult to see what possible justification they could have for not allowing this journey via the Copy Pit line.

Argh, I'd bought a few tickets from Newcastle/Sunderland to Oxenholme Lake District that relied on a map permission that's also been removed simultaneously. Shame. Also had a hell of a time trying to convince the staff at Sunderland to try to sell me an excess for the return portion of a York-Sunderland ticket to go to Oxenholme Lake District...

Ah, I also see that Darlington to Carlisle using MT+MG has gone as well...
