I'm travelling from Newcasle upon Tyne to Exeter Tuesday 4th October returning Friday 7th. I usually travel by Cross Country. I have a senior railcard and I always book a seat as I have a varicose vein that makes standing for long periods quite painful.

Outwards:

Newcastle depart: 09.42

Exeter St Davids arrive: 15.45

Price: £142.45 (Off-Peak return with Senior Railcard)

Newcastle depart: 10.39

Exeter St Davids arrive: 16.44

Price: £142.45 (Off-Peak return with Senior Railcard)

Return:

Exeter St Davids depart: 11.15

Paddington arrive: 13.49

Kings Cross depart; 15.00

Durham arrive: 17.42

Exeter St Davids depart: 15.27

Durham arrive: 21.16

The first through train from Exeter to Newcastle is at 15.27. I don't want to wait that long but all other services require at least one change. I quite fancy travelling via London but I am not sure that the £142.45 fare will still apply.

Also why are there no through services earlier in the day.

I haven't looked at adavance fares as I am always fearful that something will go wrong and I will miss the train.

I will be going to Newcastle station Wednesday and would like to be ready with the right information to make everyone's life easier.

Clearly not as it is routed ‘Not via London’. To return via London you would need a change of route excess fare for the return leg which would cost an additional £11.00.
And as mentioned above, there are major engineering works at Newcastle that week so there will be limited services to Newcastle, especially on the Friday.

There are some cheap - c £20-30 flights from Newcastle - Bristol on those dates which you may find useful

All change trip to Exeter off. Going to Lichfield instead. Would like to return on Thurday 6th. National Rail are showing trains running between New Street and Newcastle despite industrial action by TSSA. What are the chances the trains advertised on National Rail will actually run?

According to NRE, EMR, GWR and Scotrail are affected and timetables have not been updated. That should not affect your trip.
Early morning trains of other operators will be affected (typically before 0800).
