Newcastle to Derby

The cheapest I've found which gives flexibility over the route offered will cost £81.10. Your tickets would be Newcastle to York then York to Derby. This means you could go via Leeds or Doncaster. Also, if you aren't 100% on times then it would be best as some trains would after a certain time be faffy. These tickets would allow you to remain on any Cross Country service from Derby all the way to Newcastle, just make sure it stops at York - all XC services do and there is only one service that misses York per day and that is the East Coast Flying Scotsman.

If you want to be there for noon you will have to use the 09:35 Cross Country service (Voyager). There is a 09:42 service, however this arrives 30 minutes after - the advantage is that this service is mostly a HST (I believe Tuesday's and Wednesday's are when it is a Voyager) through the week and so would provide better comfort for the fairly lengthy journey.

I have found a few cheaper options but they can seriously limit you to the services you can use and so I personally wouldn't recommend using them.

Also, I would also advise you to book using the East Coast website! Not only do you get points towards a free trip, but they don't have booking fee's! If you want your tickets delivered it will cost £1 extra, but it's free to collect from the station

Thanks for taking your own time to look into this for me properly I'm just a bit of a noob in all honesty haha, so I thought this will be the best place for me (this forum) as I don't want to a) waste money b) get the wrong trains.

The 1st of July is a guarantee its the day I'm coming back is what I'm not sure (ATM), I will be finding out soon enough.

If the crunch comes to the crunch I will have to pay the £80 train ticket, I didn't honestly think it would be so expensive to go there when I've seen further places on cheaper offers, is there any reason for this? :roll:

I won't miss the train as I've used trains before and know how to use the big board and know which station to go, etc etc.

What are the cheaper options you speak of?

There is no way neither that I want to go by coach neither it takes like 5-6 hours! So besides train I don't think I have any other options, not like I can run it...

Those tickets in that image are advance tickets and so you would be tied to those specific services and for the sake of £6 I would say get the Off-Peak returns as it allows a bit more flexibility and allows you for a bit more time in Derby. Also, if you really wanted, on your return journey you can break/resume at another station, so you could go into Leeds/York etc.

I would echo the advice that for the sake of a saving less than £10, you are far better off booking a flexible Off-Peak Return. The split suggested for £81.10 is a good choice.

If you book one of those Advance tickets shown in the picture, and miss your train, then you will have to cough up for another ticket, so not really worth the risk imo.

If you can travel with Grand Central on the 0842 from Sunderland you can get Sunderland to York (Grand Central ONLY) for £17.50, then York to Derby for £41.60, so a grand total of £59.10. However, Grand Central only have on the return from York at 18:42 (arrives Sunderland at 2021) or a 21:20 (arrives Sunderland at 2251). You could always spend a bit of time in York or Leeds though if you wanted to have a break, instead of sitting on a train/platform for 3 hours and a bit!

If you get the 0842, you will end up getting the same Cross Country (XC) service that you would have gotten at Newcastle, only leaving Newcastle would be 1 hour later, and one train all the way. However the cost rises to £81.10 like mentioned in my earlier post!

Travelling from Sunderland will be no problem as I could just get a lift, in all honesty though this sounds like a right carry on - will this 80 odd quid return be the same price next week or is that just now?

May I ask, how much would it cost to go by car petrol wise, do you have a rough idea? I'm just trying to weigh up my options.

I don't fancy going to York or anywhere and waiting around neither. To get to Derby via train I will have to change once at least though won't I?

Sleeping an extra hour won't bother me too much seeing as I'm up very early every day anyways. I would love to sleep 12 hours just for once haha!

Given that you are a "noob" I really don't think you should buy anything other than the £86.90 return.

The 09:35 train will take you direct from Newcastle to Derby. There are also direct services to take you back home.

Driving.... 170 ish miles, assume a fairly normal car, I'd say maybe £35 to £40 each way, so maybe £75 total. Add to this the cost of parking in Derby for 3 days (could be free, could be £10 per day), plus if you have to borrow a car from a parent or friend there may be a cost to add you to the insurance.

Also (and don't take offence) but you seem to come across as quite young, so are your driving skills ready for a long journey?

I think that if you are a complete newbie and are not certain of the time you want to travel, this option is probably the best for you in my opinion.

You can buy these tickets on the day of travel if you want, from the ticket office, and they will be the same price.

It wouldn't have been driving, I was going to ask one of my mates to give me a lift but I was talking and you are right it will virtually be the same price going by car.
