Are you making a return journey travelling out on the 1st and back on the 7th, or are you looking for a season ticket?

Have you tried looking for Advance fares on Train Operating Company (TOC) websites, such as East Coast? These fares are normally significantly cheaper than walk-up fares.
Alternatively, if you want flexible tickets, you could buy one of the following:
£39.50 Newcastle - York Off-Peak Return
£41.60 York - Derby Off-Peak Return
Total: £81.10
You could travel on a direct CrossCountry train from Newcastle to Derby via York, Leeds/Doncaster and Sheffield. This takes around 2 hrs 30.
2 x £3.20 Anytime Day Single Newcastle - Sunderland
£17.50 Sunderland - York Anytime Return (Grand Central Only)
£23.00 York - Sheffield Anytime Return
£19.60 Sheffield - Derby Off-Peak Return
Total: £66.50
You could travel with Northern or the Tyne and Wear Metro to Sunderland, then with Grand Central to York (there are five services a day) and then on a CrossCountry train to Derby via Leeds/Doncaster and Sheffield. This is likely to take around 4 hours.

Are you happy to travel via Coach? Megabus are currently offering £8 single each way between Newcastle and Sheffield Meadowhall, then purchasing a Meadowhall to Derby Off Peak Return for £19.60 will bring the cost down to £35.60.

I would prefer to go by train to be honest, bus takes way too long!

Does anyone know how much it would cost by car (petrol) roughly and how long? I need to get there that's for sure and don't want to spend a fortune that is all and might be able to ask a friend to give me a lift.
Its not ideal in terms of journey duration or changes (and depends on your definition of dinner time), but this is cheaper.

That was the earliest train from Newcastle at anything like that price. You could do the Sunderland-Doncaster, Doncaster-Derby that you'd mentioned earlier for £24 for the outward - all the tickets are singles so theres no reason you have to return via the same route you went!
I've tried that way but on the way back the splitting is more expensive and the Doncaster to Sunderland is £20.50...

Oh sorry! I thought you meant when going back... I want to get there around noon time or before hand and I want to come back to the toon after tea time.

Newcastle 09:35 - York 10:31 Advance £10
York 10:45 - Chesterfield 12:06 Advance £9.50
Chesterfield 12:06 - Derby 12:26 £3.50
(York to Derby is the same train)
Total outward £23
So will that be one way £23 and 2 changes? Newcastle > York > Chesterfield > Derby?

You would buy two Advance tickets, one from York to Chesterfield and one from Chesterfield to Derby, but would stay on the same train from York to Derby which stops at Chesterfield.

You can buy all of them on www.eastcoast.co.uk. You don't need to pay separately, just keep adding all these tickets into the basket and pay in one go.
The £171 (which I think is what you mean) Anytime Return is a fully flexible ticket valid for one month in the return leg and valid on any train. Its flexibility means higher price.
So it will be £46 altogether the way I've been advised?
Yeah I knew it was a different type of ticket but still a lot of money for such a short journey really!

Assuming that the tickets suggested by IanXC in Posts 10 and 18 are still available (They are quota-controlled so only available in a limited number.), you are looking at £23 for the outward and £18.80 for the return journey.
Make sure you get in quick otherwise they might sell out.
Most people would not be buying the £171 ticket as for the majority of passengers, there would be something else more suitable.

Unfortunately I've been told that I will not be leaving on the 7th but earlier, possibly the 3rd or 4th, will my best option be looking still for the 1st as cheap as I can get since it will always be cheaper going two singles than a return on this route?

On 1st July (a monday) leave Newcastle Central at 09:35, arrive in derby at 11:50. Or any later train if preferred.
Your return can be any day, and any train/time on that day (except not before 09:30 am, but that isn't an issue for you).

What's the maximum you would be looking at paying?
It's not that I don't have the money because I do but I just don't see the point in me paying xxx's amount when I can get it cheaper.
I was hoping for somewhere between 50-60 return. I'm finding out the return date in a few days, should I wait until then or should I buy my single(s) for going down there first?
Which site are you using to get the £86.90, I've been reading 80 odd quid single there and 40 odd quid back and the returns are like 180 odd quid? From the thetrainline.

Don't use thetrainline as it charges a booking fee which can be avoided using other websites - try www.eastcoast.co.uk.

The £86.90 fare is the Off-Peak Return, and is valid on any train after 0930 on weekdays (no restriction at weekends). The £171 fare is the Anytime Return valid on any train.
