A friend and I are thinking about trying out the Northumberland line, from Newcastle to Ashington.

We both have senior railcards, as well as free bus passes.

It seems that for two return tickets .. Newcastle to Ashington, the price would be £6.80

Surprisingly though, if we travelled from The Metrocentre to Ashington, with a change at Newcastle, the price would only be £6 for the two return tickets.

So two trains, double the fun and cheaper too .. perfect !!

Return tickets by train from Newcastle to Metrocentre would be £5, but with free bus passes each, that's a better bet.

Just goes to show how strange some tickets prices are

Suspect that the Newcastle->Ashington tickets are actually Off Peak Singles (one required each way) at £1.70 each (× 4 = £6.80) and the MetroCentre->Ashington tickets are booked train only Advance Singles (route AP Northern only) at £1.50 each (× 4 = £6.00), so, yes, a saving but not quite comparing like with like.
