Newcastle Platform Numbering

Not sure if this should go into the railways in tv/film thread, but I Was watching old episodes of Spender w/Jimmy Nail and the times he goes in Newcastle on a train it is to/from platform 8 or 9, which actually looks like platforms 2 and 3, is that a mistake or has Newcastle Platforms been renumbered at some point?

It was renumbered when the old Tyneside electric bays went (now the car park to the north end of p1), when the ECML was electrified IIRC. That would put the changes at late 80s / early 90s.

The changes I see (comparing pre- and post- versions in Quail):

- old p4-6 abolished (p1-3 had gone some time previously) - these were the Tyneside electric bays that became a car park.
- old p7 became new p1.
- old p8 became new p2.
- old p9 became new p3.
- old p10 became new p4.
- new p5-8 not shown as existing beforehand, it looks as though it was created from land to the south of old p10 then occupied by signalbox and sidings.
- p11-p14 renumbered p9-p12.

Platforms 5-8 were built in the parcels sidings within the south train shed (5 and 6 - one platform split at centre point) and 7/8 on the south side of the shed on an original freight line (as 5/6 7/8 is one platform spilt). The signalbox was in the platform buildings between 9/10, 3/4 as they are now and a bridge extension went through the platform buildings to access the new 5/6/7/8.

Platforms 11-14 are now 9-12 not 8-12

The platforms were reconstructed when the ECML was electrified in the early 90s, with the through line between the current platforms 2 and 3 being taken out and platform 2 widened. Platforms 5/6 and 7/8 were then created from the former stabling sidings to allow for more through roads (rather than having all the bay platforms which were no longer needed.

I seem to recall these being numbered 15 and 16 when they were first opened and before the renumbering. It was not for long though I don't think...

Platform 7/8 was not a stabling siding, it was formed from one of the passing lines outside the train shed. Platform 5/6 is inside the shed and is where the parcels sidings were.
