Newcastle - Middlesbrough, via Darlington?

Just viewing the Live Departure Boards for Newcastle, and it says there is a Newcastle to Middlesbrough train, by Northern, calling at the following:

Newcastle (Your station) Dep 21:50
Chester-le-Street Arr 21:59
Durham Arr 22:07
Darlington Arr 22:29
Allens West Arr 22:41
Eaglescliffe Arr 22:43
Thornaby Arr 22:48
Middlesbrough Arr 22:57

I never realised there was a service that went through Darlington, to Middlesbrough (from newcastle). Anyone shed any light?

It used to run roughly every two hours iirc a few years back and ran to Saltburn but was curtailed due to capacity issues on the ECML (I think that was the reason) Good chance to experience a 142 doing top end though

Theres also a service Sunday only Hartlepool - Darlington which used to use the bay platform at Hartlepool but not sure if it still does.

Thanks, the Hartlepool - Darlington service still does use the bay platform, and I think it should run more often, maybe every 2 hours? Would definately help.

When I was at Teesside Uni around 8/9 years ago it ran every hour for most of the day and was well used to places beyond Darlington. I always preferred the coastal route though as it offered better scenery
