At the airport station there is a signal a few yards before the end of the line. Why is there a signal at the terminal?

Isn't road knowledge, and the lights on top of the buffers supposed to prevent that?

It's just to cover their back if there is a major derailment - as when you see a yellow you then expect the red. The red being on or near the buffer stop.

Indeed, basically just another safety precaution!

I presume it is a fixed distant and always yellow?

The signal in question (at the buffer stops) is a fixed red, I guess the one before it could be fixed yellow, but it may be approach controlled.
