Newcastle - Kirkcaldy Advance ticket

My wife and I will be travelling from Newcastle to Kirkcaldy rtn on 18th Feb 2012, on an Advance purchase ticket, with a Two Together railcard. The return journey is Kirkcaldy dep 1813, with an eleven minute connection at Wavereley onto the 1900 Newcastle departure.
My question is, can I travel on the 1748 ex Kirkcaldy to increase the connecting time at Waverley, in case the 1813 is running late?.
Splitting the return journey at Waverley pushes the cost to about £23 instead of £14.90 btw.

Depends if the Kirkcaldy train is reservable (you will either have a reservation ticket for a particular seat or just that train) - if so, then no you cannot get an earlier service. If it isn't, I personally don't think you'll have any issues

The minimum connection time at Waverley is 10 minutes, so if you miss it due to the incoming train being even just a couple of minutes late, you will be able to get your ticket endorsed by the ticket office to travel on the next service to Newcastle in any case

I've just booked it, and the Kirkcaldy- Edinburgh leg is non-reservable, so I should be ok. I was just a bit concerned, as the 1900 ex Waverley is the last southbound on Saturday nights. Thanks.

I'd say it would be prudent to take the earlier train. 11mins would be uncomfortably tight for a train that has run through the peak hours, where delays on the fife line are not uncommon.

If the first leg is unreserved then you will be allowed to take an earlier connecting train.

For reference, if you miss your last connection of the day due to your connection being late, the railway cannot leave you stranded. They will in principle have to either arrange alternative transport (either from Edinburgh or from a nearer location to your destination if they can get you there by rail still) or arrange for overnight accommodation and carry you the following day.

Not really .... There is a decent pub in the station, and another on Threshmarket close, just outside the station. Both do food as well, IIRC.

The Nor' Loch always brings the word 'dive' to mind...there are a few good pubs within 5 mins walk.

Little else to do other than drink though!
