I have tried for years to get hold of a picture which was long lost to my childhood.

I had a book of trains and there was one picture which has always stuck in my memory. It's of Newcastle Central station (from the Castle I think - but could be a helicopter) looking down on the East End of the station. There is a HST snaking its way into the station, and some DMUs in now replaced terminating platforms.

I think it's in colour (Blue and Silver BR livery) though can't be sure. The pic was taken in either the late 70's or early 80's judging by the trains.

Can anyone help please?

There are many photos taken of that end of Newcastle station and yes, they are usually taken from the castle. (Much cheaper than helicopters!)

I have actually found a Black and White photo in 'British Rail 1948-78 - a Journey by Design' (page 172, picture 317) which shows exactly the scene you describe on a Winter's day in February 1978. The text with the picture says this is a training run prior to the HSTs being introduced on public services, so that would seem a good starting point.

I suggest you try either the local library for some railway books or perhaps the NRM's 'Search Engine'.

I think the image you are looking for was published on the front page of the Hornby Railways "00" Gauge Track Plans Sixth Edition book 1986.
