We're off to NZ in November, and planning to enjoy all three Kiwi Rail passenger routes (as well as Interislander ferries);
Coastal Explorer Picton - Christchurch
TranzAlpine Christchurch - Greymouth
Northern Explorer Wellington - Auckland
Having perused the Kiwi Rail website and Man At Seat 61, I'd appreciate any further advice on the following;
Discounts - I notice a discount with a Top 10 Holiday Parks Card; are there any better discount offers suitable for visitors?
Freedom Destinations - This UK Travel Agency advertises a Combo through fare from Wellington to Christchurch, but I can't find it offered anywhere else. Is it good value and are fares booked through Freedom Destinations any better value than those booked direct through Kiwi Rail?
Packages - I can find Kiwi Rail inclusive tour packages, but is there any discount for taking all three rail routes?
Scenic Plus - I'm considering this for the long journey from Wellington to Auckland. My choice obviously whether it's worth paying the extra (I have forked out in the past for Glacier Express Excellence Class) but I'd appreciate feedback on how the food compares with that served at the cafe-bar, and the generosity of the drinks service.
