New York Subway question

Evening all,

Last week was spent on the East Coast of America with a visit to the cities of New York and Philadelphia. Photos of this visit are now online at http://thewanderersirishrailphotos.fotopic.net/c1765899.html

Highlights of the trip include:
- JFK Airtrain connecting JFK Airport to Jamaica Station and Howard Beach Station.
- Jamaica Station, a major junction on the Long Island Railroad.
- The 33rd street branch of the PATH system which operates between New Jersey & New York.
- Visit to Philadelphia with photos of the subway system and some of the City sights including an Bristol VR double decker bus!
- New York Subway with visits to several locations on the system including 125th street, Times Square Shuttle, Coney Island, Franklin Avenue Shuttle, Broadway Junction, Queensborough Plaza plus a few more.
- The High Line Linear Park along an abandoned elevated freight line in Manhattan.
- Plus a visit to an locations with items of an Irish Railway interest in the centre of New York.

If you're going on the NY Subway, be sure to get a southbound 6 train to Brooklyn Bridge/City Hall and 'forget' to get off when it terminates, and you will be taken round the old City Hall loop, through the disused City Hall station, and back up into Brooklyn Bridge station, facing the other way, which is very interesting. They don't tend to empty the trains like the London Underground does when they terminate, so you can get some interesting empty stock journeys just by forgetting to get off!

Other good places to visit are the south ferry loop on the 1 train - very old and bizarre with those metal plates that come out to fill the gap between the train and the platform and only half the train in the platform - I heard this station is going to close soon due to rebuilding (if it hasn't already) so catch it while you can!

Alas, the old South Ferry Station on the loop closed earlier this year. The tracks still remain in place, and are used for non revenue moves.

As for the City Hall loop, that is formally considered revenue service trackage so you are within your rights as a fare paying customer to remain on board around the loop if you wish.

Before that change a few years ago, this was considered non revenue trackage and staff were assigned to clear the trains. When I was a NYCTA employee, I would lead my staff and others on tours of this station.

You certainly covered a fair bit of the subway system. Did you encounter any difficulties when taking photos in the NYC subway system, PATH or SEPTA?

PATH in particular, is very strict about enforcing their "no photography" rule.

It is always interesting to see photos of my "home" system as others view it.
