New Year’s Day services

Historically WYPTE or metro (70’s-00’s - I left the area early 2000’s) always ran a full weekday service if New Year’s Day fell on a weekday. this usually included trains to Manchester or York outside the boundary being ran too.

Is this still the case?

@onlinespotting. Can't answer your specific West Yorkshire query, but in the adjacent Greater Manchester area, trains are being advertised as operating a "weekday service" on New Year's Day 2026, albeit with some services starting later than normal.

Yes....normal weekday service in West Yorkshire and associated cross-boundary routes. Back in the day, when I was a driver at Skipton, the first train to Leeds at 06 04 would pick up a few bleary-eyed revellers....then we'd be largely carrying fresh air until about midday.

Talking about New years... The Elizabeth Line seems to be running a 24hr service from Reading to Abbey-Wood and Paddington to Abbey-Wood / Shenfield. No Heathrow service understandably. SWR services are running a tad later too.

Heathrow is closed, at least no flights till about 5am+ which by then the elizabeth line would be running to Heathrow again.

I always found NYD to be a great day for a pub crawl, quiet trains and a full service, pubs often open at weekend times if they didn't usually open early during the week. Perfect.

Here in East Anglia EMR are running a full weekday service. GA are also running a full off peak timetable with a slightly later start on most routes apart from those affected by engineering works. There’s even a relief service operating Norwich - Sheringham-Cromer & Cromer to Norwich for the NYD fireworks on the coast.

In the NE, roughly from Northallerton to the Border, other than main line train services and long distance coaches, we have a public transport desert. Northern are running 2 return services from Darlington to Whitby and, to help with the WCML closure, a 2 hourly service othe Tyne Valley Line.
This has long been the case, NYD was observed as a holiday even before it became an English bank holiday around 1970.

Probably because it is near to Scotland who have a two day New Year Holiday. The North East thought that we would like some of that, so it decided to shut up shop on NYD as well.

If I'm allowed to widen the subject to buses, I was surprised to find that Stagecoach in Aldershot, Farnborough and Guildford have no services running on any routes today. I was expecting at least a Sunday service, even if possibly with a late start.

If you mean the NE, it's decades-old local habit leading to lack of customer demand.
Note: I am not saying there is NO demand, only relatively little by comparison with other areas.

80% of pubs closed in Leeds centre and in the suburbs judging by my trawls of social media. Always a terrible day to have a home game because not only are many of the pubs shut but the buses don't run, meaning no link to the ground.

Taxis there, at a cost, but the 2 1/2 mile walk back via Holbeck, without a decent pub to go to, is always particularly depressing, win draw or lose.

I can't say I've done the city centre on NYD but I've always found the suburbs to be open, if nothing else than for people to watch the football in there. Holbeck's a bit of a desert for pubs these days, about the first you come to's the midnight bell, though I think there's plans for the Commercial.

Becasue GTR are running a Sunday service.
