I thought that it was customary because there were new car announcements near TPE, WMR, and the recent new FC announcements such as Angria.
Thank you everyone.
In the case of Greater Anglia I believe it was announced they would be replacing every train around the time the franchise was awarded to them, but which manufacturer would supply them, how many and what specification they would have was not made public until much later on.

I would have thought that a court case would automatically cause a freeze on the award. After all, if the DfT lost, and had to rerun the competition.....
And that's why there's always a 7day standstill after the initial announcement before the new TOC can start signing contracts.

Well it apparently is not causing any such freeze and Stagecoach and Abellio are both working on the mobilisation. The first meeting involving the unions as well as Stagecoach and Abellio is on Friday.

From what I gather, electrifying to Leicester would be difficult due to clearance under one of the station bridges with a mains sewer underneath it and the council very reluctant to close the road for several weeks. Add in to the fact that the station needs completely remodelling/re-signalling and four tracking from Syston to Wigston with major work required to separate cross country and emt services at the Wigston end, I think wiring to harborough is about as good as it will get for the foreseeable future.

There are new solutions for restricted clearances (see Cardiff Intersectional Bridge). Totally agree with your point about Syston-Wigston capacity though. There's no clarity about whether this will be funded with the CP6 Enhancements budget though

i suppose it's possible to have a short-ish neutral section going directly under the bridge, as long as you have units that require 2 panto's up and are basically isolated.

clearances are only really an issue when the wires are live.

If Stagecoach were wanting the decision overturned then they would have applied for an injunction to prevent contract signature. That suggests they are after recovering costs, which is added to as it looks like their Rail Division is being wound down (Tim Shoveller is moving to Network Rail, for instance).

TransPennine Express, West Midlands Trains (WMR and London Northwestern) and Greater Anglia are pre-established train operating companies (2016, 2017 and 2016 respectively), whereas East Midlands Railway won't be active until August 2019.

If so, I think it is a good decision.

This is a thread for the new trains for the East Midlands franchise only.

If anyone wants to post about anything else, please use an existing thread (if there is one) or create a new one (if there isn't) in the appropriate forum section. Thanks.

There is truth in all this, but I think I read that the Midland's exit from London as far out as Bedford, is (was) laid out for higher speeds than the GNRs exit from Kings Cross.

Hmmm. Not much in it, methinks. It is true that, because St Pancras was designed to be built over storage space for Burton beer and crossed above the Regent's Canal that the start was much easier for engines. (Well, I suppose it still is, but we don't worry so much about gradients with the power available these days.)
But it was I think 50 or so to Kentish Town, and 70 to Silkstream Jcn. Then you had 80s at St Albans and Luton. From MP 34 near Leagrave to Bedford was fast, but that was because it was a long stretch mostly downhill.

Edit: oh dear - I've only now seen Yorkie's stern warning about new trains n stuff. I suspect this will be banished into the ether.

But that was on the down. I don't know what typical speeds were on the up in steam days. My guess would be a Scot or Jubilee would be doing well to top the bank at MP 34 at 60 mph, maybe even 55, after passing Bedford at speed. A class 45 would probably be doing around 75 mph.

Irrelevant, as today it's 125mph from about Cricklewood? to Bedford, except for St Alban's and Luton.

The ECML is still 115mph for quite a way, therefore London to Leicester is actually a very similar journey time to London to Grantham on the ECML, although Grantham is slightly further being 105 miles, compared to 99 to Leicester.

Moving back on topic "modern diesel trains" being introduced from 2020 on the mainline, but not the new trains as they have a more realistic target of 2022. Is this just the 222s that worked Corby being displaced by EMUs, or are there additional DMUs moving over?

Earlier in the thread someone suggested it might include some secondhand 180s, for what it’s worth...

Just seen 180s and 360s and 170s officially confirmed and a photo of the new livery. Nothing about LNER HSTs.

180s? Really?

Sounds like yet another great idea in theory in bid managers eyes that probably wasn't ran by the operational team who would have probably guided against it.

I figured 180s was likely - they're the only 'readily available' high speed diesel units. I'm not sure it's a good idea, but it's an obvious one nonetheless :D
