New Trainee Train Conductor

Hello,

I hope you're well. I am due to start at Fratton Station with GWR on the 30th of September, and I’ll be attending training in Swindon for six weeks.

While I’m excited, I must admit I’m feeling a bit nervous since I don’t have much knowledge about the railway industry yet.

Do you have any tips or advice to help me prepare for this new role?

Congratulations! I'm sure you're looking forward to it!

To put your mind at ease, you'll be taught everything you need to be taught, including aspects of the rail industry. So don't be worried too much about it. You've been selected because GWR of course see skills and a personality in you which they think will make you an excellent conductor - its much easier to teach facts and processes than it is attitude!

The only real things I'd suggest is to learn the phonetic alphabet (if you don't know it already) and generally browse around GWR's website and wikipedia for a bit of brief information on their trains and routes generally if that will help you feel more comfortable. But otherwise relax and be prepared to get stuck in and have the right attitude towards your training.

I second the last reply. I had absolutely no knowledge of the industry and I am now six weeks into training. Just pay attention and embrace learning new things

I wouldn't worry about a lack of previous knowledge or experience , chances are most of the people on your course won't be from a railway background . They start off with very basics .

Turn up with the right attitude , ask any questions that crop up however daft you feel they are(they probably are not and someone else is probably thinking the same) and try and learn as much as you can from experienced staff when you go out doing the practical element of the training .

The original poster hasn’t logged onto the forum for a few months, it’s unlikely they’re going to see this I’m afraid. I can see you’ve asked in more detail in another thread, I’m going to bring this one to a close.
