Train fares in Belgium are being significantly overhauled from 15 October. Long distance travellers look well catered for in the new fares.

Advantageous tariffs for all

✔ Travel anytime at the Standard tariff. Long-distance journeys become up to 20% cheaper than today.
✔ Weekend tariff: 30% discount on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. Also for a single trip.
Children (-12) still travel with you for free (max. 4 per paying traveller)

Extra discount with Train+

40% discount on the Standard tariff during off-peak hours
40% extra discount on Weekend tariff
Never pay more than € 14 per trip (2nd class), regardless of time of day
✔ Only € 6 per month or € 48per year
Launch offer : until 4 January 2026, Train+ only costs €3 for 1 month or €24 for 12 months.

I see some of the existing products are being withdrawn but is this a fare cut overall?

The main disadvantage appears to be that break of journey is banned. Interestingly, doubling back is explicitly allowed where the journey planner suggests it (i.e. where it's quicker I guess) - I guess those two are connected. It seems designed for a system that will move to having gatelines and contactless payment, perhaps?

No gates are planned. The disappearance of the zones and the right to break the journey are related to the fact that you need to start your journey outside the rush hour window for the Train+ card discount, and some NMBS/SNCB staff regard the passenger, in the first place, as a potential fraud.

I wonder how strict the break enforcement will be? Must you absolutely use an itinerary from the planner? Or can you wait for the next train if the one that you would be on is a bit full e.g. because it's short formed? If the former, then that is a significant downgrade, though I suppose with a kilometric system you don't really lose out (nor indeed gain) by splitting the tickets at the change point.

In the UK by comparison even in cases where BoJ is technically banned, it basically isn't enforced unless you'd save significant money by doing so.

If you have a digital ticket (e.g. bought in the app), then there's no way to enforce it. Staff currently can't see what earlier trains you've used.
I've read comments that you can allow up to an hour to change trains. The full revised terms and conditions have not been published yet.

If you hit the maximum fare cap then it will be cheaper on a through ticket. For example, Oostende to Liège and Brugge to Liège are both over 120 km so both these tickets will be the maximum fare, but a trip from Oostende to Liège, breaking journey at Brugge will be maximum fare from Brugge to Liège, plus another ticket from Oostende to Brugge.

Does the SNCB/NMBS concession require a government subsidy? What's the approximate farebox / subsidy ratio if anyone knows? Thanks.

Yes, of course, no need to even ask-also applies to all other forms of transport, regulated by the regions. Rian will know best, in my memory its about 50/60% recovery from farebox? Just check what that new google AI says.
For the average visitor from abroad very little will actually change. Of course there will always be some specific cases that may apply to <0,1% of all travellers that come out negative, and that some like to seek out and proclaim as giant loss.
What will DISappear:
1.the flat fare special singles for juniors en returns for seniors. And some other flat fare special tickets mostly aimed for locals-10 ride cards.
2.the ´zonal´ fares to all bigger cities with more as 1 station. One now has to specificy exactly to where one wants to exit.
3.right to break of journey
What will be NEW:
discounts for all and depending on weekday/weekend
also EVEning peak-from 16-18 hr, beside the former ´after 9.00 am
more easy to get and for just 1 month ´rail+´=discount card-can be loaded on MoBiB chipcard or got as temporary paper ticket-but I guess they would prefer it you load on their app.
In my case: a senior single from border to border (to cross Belgium) goes up from 10,20 now till 12,50, without that card.
AThe introduction offer is that rail+ is on offer for half price till 1/1/26.
What amazes me a bit is on how short notice they start it all. Though the general idea was made public long ago.
And there remain some hidden snags that noone mentions:
there IS a lowest MINIMum fare of 2,50, also with whatever type of card one has.
THere is also a big difference in actual fares charged as domestic IN the country and via INTERnational systems.
What remains unclear (to me, on this info) is how it will apply to ´only last stop IN/OUt of BE or actual border tariff point.

The new fares will also apply to the Belgian part of the trains to Roosendaal, Breda (EC only), Maastricht, Aachen (regional train only), Luxembourg, Maubeuge and Lille Flandres. They will also apply to the the NMBS/SNCB part of a journey with TGV, Eurostar, ICE, NightJet, European Sleeper, Ouigo, ECD, if you book it through a channel that can sell them. The product sheets have already been published.

Next month, I am travelling from Brussels to Luxembourg, the outward journey would be via Bertrix (no break of journey) but on the return I'd like to go via Liège and break my journey there.

Under the new conditions I believe only the shortest route is automatically valid, unless the SNCB journey planner offers an alternative route. The shortest route is via Libramont and Arlon, and the SNCB international site suggests via Liège by default as it's quickest. I can also get it to offer itineraries via Libramont and Bertrix if I enter a 'via' point - but not via Gedinne and Bertrix.

Does this mean that travelling via Gedinne isn't valid? It would seem bizarre if so, since it's barely any longer than going via Libramont and Bertrix, and much shorter than going via Liège.

Do the new conditions, prohibiting break of journey, apply to international tickets as well as domestic ones? In practice, would I be likely to have any issues breaking my return journey at Liège for a few hours? Splitting is of course an option, but due to the maximum single fare cap with Train+ it costs quite a lot more.

Is there any kind of day ticket covering all of Belgium? That would seem to be much simpler than faffing about working out permitted routes and break of journey rules...

Thanks in advance:)

(Edit: it's next month, not this month)

Note there is a strike planned 25-30 January, so that might be your main concern right now. Looking at the Belgian Railways website, the resulting reduced service won't be known until the day before each strike day.

Nope, that doesn't exist. The nearest thing is the Interrail Benelux 3 day pass which includes the Netherlands and Luxembourg as well.

For international tickets, the border tariff point is also important. There are 3 between Luxembourg and Belgium, and a ticket will only specify one of them, which you'll normally have to use. The route within Belgium should then be determined between the border tariff point and your start/destination, so e.g. the route via Gouvy and Liège is not relevant for journeys via Rodange or Arlon.
Brussels-Luxembourg via Bertrix and Rodange is perfectly possible, but not via Bertrix and Arlon. Bertrix-Rodange via Gedinne gave me options via Namur - Bertrix - Athus only. 2nd class is free in Luxembourg anyway (and this is taken into account for international tickets), so you could just buy a ticket to Rodange.

Break of journey in Belgium is not permitted anymore either on journeys from/to Luxembourg (and some other borders, depending on train and ticket type).
You're not required to use the standard settings for the minimum connection times; the NMBS app has a maximum settings of 60 minutes though, so that may not be enough. The international booking website goes up to 90 minutes, so you should be able force a 2-hour break in Liège.
I haven't heard of the break of journey being enforced (yet).

When I asked a train manager recently he said no breakfast of journey was allowed, I would need 2 separate tickets.

If you decided to break a journey while en route, can the guard or a ticket office at the break station alter an original booking and issue new tickets for the separate legs, charging any excess neccessary, or is the remaining validity automatically cancelled and you would be forced to buy an entirely new ticket for the remaining part of the journey. The reason for breaking a journey might be as simple as realising you need some groceries on the way home, perhaps most easily obtained near an intermediate station. If you are technically banned from doing this, then the train is deliberately becoming even less flexible than the main competition.

Is BoJ banned in the Northern penalty fare sense or in the more sensible sense of that if you exit the system validity ends even if the journey is not complete, which is how BR generally saw it for tickets that were so restricted?

How strict is the BoJ ban? I've bought a return ticket from Midi/Zuid to Antwerpen Centraal but want to start my outbound journey from Brussels North instead.

Don't worry about that. In 25 years of almost daily commute, I've been checked maybe 5 times within Brussels...

I can't remember having been checked on any of my shorter journeys in Belgium (Brussels <> Waterloo; Lille – Ghent – Brussels) either, although I'd be surprised if this case would be an issue either way.

Not directly related, but something I'm not sure if it's worth making a new post for; is it necessary or even possible to buy tickets for Arlon to Luxembourg rail replacement buses? I've bought a Brussels to Arlon ticket for today but neither the NMBS domestic or international app nor CFL website could sell a Brussels to Luxembourg ticket, except via Liège.

Edit: the international ticket office at Bruxelles-Midi / Brussel Zuid solved it; they said to use the ticket machine for the rail replacement bus ticket (€2.60, at least for under-26s).

Can you get the Train+ discount on websites other than SNCB/NMBS domestic or international? I can't see an option for Train+ on NS International.

Since the last fare-hike of 1/2/26 the MIN price of 2,60 applies to each and everyone-whatever discount card they may hold. IF one did not break the journey in Arlon/Aarlen, then it is in fact an extra that would have been unnecessary. This makes such cards promise more as delivered for travels on very short distances.
I cannot remember any time where there were checks on replacement buses. Even in cases were they were supposed to sell tickets on them-for minor stops where it would otherwise have been done by conductors due to lack of ticket-machines.

Sounds like some kind of data issue. They should normally be able to sell tickets for replacement buses. If you bought a separate ticket Brussels-Arlon, then you paid €2.60 too much in the end, since you'd have reached the maximum fare.
