Quite fancy the mini-tour Manchester > Holyhead. Be nice to do the North Wales coast with 37s after all this time.

That's still ok because Spitfire will most likely use Mk1's and even if it's 33's it'll be nice to have LHCS with rateable traction over the North Wales Coast once again! 37429 you will not be forgotten! <D

TBH I would prefer 33s. I like 37s a lot, but 33s would be a nice change. Spitfire Railtours = Syphon Railtours sometimes it seems.

Posts on wnxx seem to have been suggesting it will be BRCW Type 3s instead of the usual English Electric.

Unfortunately this tour is only one week after that (for me) stalwart of the calendar the K&WVR diesel gala. That means I will have used up all my credits at home and will no way be allowed out.

Still, it's good to know that Spitfire may be using Cromptons. If it can happen once, it can happen again.....

Eh? This tour is on 26th March, the KWVR diesel gala is the 20th - 22nd May.

I will of course do it if its 37s, but not 33s. If it's going to North Wales it quite simply should be a pair of 37s.

It's unlikely a pair of 33s would sell well.

Why shouldn't it be 33s? They were pottering up and down the coast on passenger trains well before the 'johnny come lately' 37/4s appeared in high frequency!

Oops. Misread it as 26th May. OTOH that's a good thing as I now might be able to do it :)

I think 33s would sell very well. They're very popular locos and there's been a glut of tractors on tours for years. They'd make a nice change.

And as you love them so much, it could also be 47s!! Oh that would make me laugh. Everyone turning up hoping for a 33 or 37, and through the morning Manchester smog, the unmistakable sound that is a 47 rumbles through the station, and 4SRKT turns in disgust, tutting away to himself. Pulling out his ipod, he turns on his 'Sounds of the Thumpers' album!!

I hope Spitfire aren't going down the "unspecified traction" road with this one and provide gen ASAP so people can decide are they going or not.

It's bad enough the likes of UK Railtours, Rail Blue and Compass Tours to name a few not specifying traction without another joining the ranks.

I hope so too. It'll be the end of Spitfiring for me if they do.

Isn't this an effect of 'basher syndrome', where operators are fear carnage if they advertise tractors? Or carnage if they specify tractors and the FOC/TOC is unable to provide tractors at short notice?

I haven't seen any 'carnage' on any tours, tractor-hauled or otherwise, since 2008's Capital Whistler. Even then it was hardly carnage, but was blown out of proportion by the Mail on Sunday and the media's favourite railway rent-a-quote (and smug git) Wolmar.

Carnage was what happened on the Aberystwyth tractors every summer Saturday in the mid-80s*, not anything that happens today.

* and jolly good fun it was too!

The PR damage for the tour industry was probably enough to enforce a lot of this, given that quote on the Peak Army and other groups of bashers. They don't want people to think they've got a trainload of rent-a-thugs on the train (that shot with the PA and the Union Jack really did look like a National Front meeting, sorry)

TBH it's libellous to say that Peak bashers are nazis, and Wolmar should know better and hang his pompous head in shame. As should anyone who uses lies of this type to justify enforcing anything.

I suspect this tour is showing as TBA as the traction most likely hasn't been confirmed. Spitfire are advertising class 37s for other tours so it's not a case of not advertising 37s.

I'm sorry for perhaps being dense but what is this incident involving the Capital Whistler everyone is referring to? I've never heard anything about it

It was presented by the Mail on Sunday and Wolmar as being some sort of on-train riot, the accompanying article ridiculed diesel enthusiasts and came within a gnat's wing of saying that flailing is nazi saluting.

I was on the train and it was nothing of the sort. There was a fight about something or another and the Police were called, but nothing serious happened. In fact as we were in Doncaster station apparantly waiting for the fuzz, they were busy on board a southbound ECML working chucking off Ipswich Town supporters like it was going out of fashion, but this never got a mention.

Much as it pains me to post anything to do with the loathsome Mail, the article is here. Wolmar subsequently tried to backtrack a bit from his statements, but that's easy after the event.

Just to clarify, I don't mean anything of the sort

In June, an incident involving a man seen perilously leaning out of a train on a trip organised by Spitfire Tours led to an official complaint by Network Rail.
The company wrote to Spitfire threatening to withdraw its licence to operate if there were further incidents.

And that's why Spitfire has all those rules and enforces them so tightly

To be fair, the only comment ive seen of Wolmars, regarding Peak enthusiasts and nazi salutes, was basically explaining that flailing can look like a nazi salute. I read the comment, looked at the accompanying picture, and saw nothing wrong with what was said at all. OK if you want to be picky, you could probably point to very slight differences, but to the normal person in the street, the comparison he used gave them a good idea what he meant by 'flailing'.
Its perhaps not a nice comparison, but its a helpful one when trying to describe it. Certainly if someone asked me what it was, then id probably say something along similar lines.

As long as you dont take the comment the wrong way (which too many people have), then there is no reason to get upset by it.

Admittedly Wolmar isnt always full of compliments for some enthusiasts, but as long as you realise which enthusiasts he is taking a swipe at, then there is nothing to get worried about. Im an enthusiast, but i dont get upset by his comments, because i know that he wouldnt have any problems with any of my actions, and he is getting at the idiots that act like yobs (and unfortunately there are some about).
Thinking back to Virgins final 47 hauled arrival into Penzance, and what went on during the final hour of that journey. Shouting and screaming in the coaches and out the window, beer cans being chucked out the window, complaints from other passengers of rude enthusiasts, to such an extent that the police had to be called.
Thats who Wolmar is taking a swipe at, and I 100% agree with him.

No it isn't. It's a very serious and libellous matter to say something is 'nazi-style' when it isn't. Nazism is not a trivial matter and it serves neither people who are not nazis to be accused of it, not people struggling against right-wing extremism to have nazism trivialised in this opportunistic way. It is therefore not 'helpful' to say that flailing is nazi-saluting, but highly misleading and offensive on a number of levels.

God knows I'm no fan of the Peak Army, but that's not the point. Libel is libel, and is not less so simply because you happen not to like the person or peope being libelled.

Just checked with the Network Rail baseline capability (basically a sectional appendix) here: http://www.networkrail.co.uk/browse...ute availability\Western Route&pageid=0&root=
37's are cleared Maidenhead-Bourne End with the exception of 37/7s and 37/9s. MK1s and MK2s are also allowed but not MK3s. They are subject to a speed limit somewhere but that information is missing.
37s are banned from Twyford-Henley unless assisting a failed train in an emergency though. In fact the only locomotives allowed are Class 08s.
I presume Spitfire would have been in contact with Network Rail about this and may perhaps have special authority to run their train to Henley.
