The training will be 2 weeks (if it hasn't changed since I did it) The first week will be like a company induction, learning about the company, telling the induction group about yourself, learning about policies in regards to disabled passengers, Basic first aid, team building exercises (nothing to strenuous) You'll also go and look on board a train and they will show you anything you may need to know about in an emergency. You'll also cover railway knowledge in regards to things you may find line side and infrastructure.
You'll also go and do fire safety training outside of Glasgow somewhere. There's a shipyard or navy base nearby if I remember correctly.
The second week the group will probably be smaller as some grades go straight into their job specific training.
You'll learn about SQUIRE and PPM where you'll be sent out in groups to look at a station and audit the station the same way an audit officer from transport Scotland would. It's basically a nice day out and gives you a chance to see people doing their jobs (or not) around the network.
Basically all you need to do is turn up, participate and you'll have a great time. Some of the stuff they cover in the 2 weeks can be a little bit dry but it's required by the company I guess. You're being paid to be there and you get a hotel (usually Jury's Inn) and meals provided so it's a pretty good set up.
As for comparing the training you'll get in regards to emergency evacuation, you'll get a basic grounding in evacuation but it will be nothing like evacuation training in the airline industry I'm guessing. Emergency procedure us more the domain of the driver or guard and you'll just learn to assist basically.
You're lucky to be working out of Aberdeen as well, great bunch of people in the hospitality and good supervisors. Pretty good variety of shifts, earliest being a 5.46 train to Edinburgh during the week (5.33 to Glasgow on Saturday) latest shift haves you finish at around 22.30 during the week (back of 12am on Saturdays) You're working with around 20 other stewards so there are plenty of other people to swap shifts with. When I left I think they are looking at changing the shifts so I don't know if that has happened yet.
Anyway, it's a great place to start out in the railway if you want to move into another rail job or staying in hospitality might float your boat.
