Plans to build a new bus and railway station for Teesside Park, as well as additional parking have been revealed today.

The Tees Valley combined authority confirmed £150million has been allocated to build the new transport interchange.

Extra parking, more bus services and a bus interchange are also included in the proposals.

The plans will create a new rail link and station at Teesside Park, in Stockton, where plans for a major new Care and Health zone are being developed.

Money will also go into an overhaul of Thornaby Station.

Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said: “Teesside Park is one of the most popular destinations for people to shop, eat out and work but transport to and from it needs to be improved.

“The new rail and bus interchange will also link in with plans for Care and Health Innovation Zone at the Tees Marshalling Yards, meaning people will have access to the high-quality jobs created there, as well as better connectivity to Teesside Park.

“On top of the new Teesside Park link, we also want to transform Thornaby Station –making it a station fit for people north and south of the river in the heart of Teesside, especially given the number of services that pass through Thornaby.

“This huge funding package has provided us with a once-in-a-generation opportunity to transform travel across Teesside, Darlington and Hartlepool.

“We want our area to be at the forefront of delivering the innovative transport solutions of the future and I look forward to revealing the full details of what we’ve got planned.”
Interesting plans albeit with little detail.

I wonder where they’re planning on putting this station given that the dual carriageway junction sits between Teesside park and the railway, and it’s at least a 15 minute walk to get from the railway to the main part of Teesside Park. We don’t want a repeat of the Teesside Airport situation.

The pedestrian infrastructure at Teesside park is also abysmal. They’ve recently put in good walkways and crossings internally to the south part of Teesside park, but to get to the north east (almost abandoned) part involves walking over empty roads and grass verges, and there’s no good way to walk there unless you’re coming from the west.

I don't really understand the thinking behind a rail station there. It'll only be served by northern; its close to Middlesbrough which surely makes a better transport interchange; the connections between any station and the retail area are going to be difficult to achieve with a dual carriageway.

I wonder if Houchen is the main driving force behind this or if there's actual planners behind such a move? I do wonder if the mayoral system works in smaller urban areas. It seems fine in places like Greater Manchester but Burnham has a large pool of expertise to fall back on for detailed policy from the likes of TfGM. Not sure the same expertise exists in Teeside.

Reading further, it does appear that it's coupled with development in the area. This is the only way I can see a station being viable.

The news item states:

The plans will create a new rail link and station at Teesside Park.

Rather than simply a new station on the existing line.

In fairness, if it has an interchange with other transport, it could easily be a replacement for Thornaby for the intercity trains.

It sounds like they're trying to resurrect some of the Tees Valley Metro plans, unofficially though - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tees_Valley_Metro

Perhaps given Middlesbrough doesn't form a great interchange with buses. I feel it's creating too many potential intercity stations within a couple of miles though. It'd better focusing interchanges on Middlesbrough and Thornaby, and constructing a smaller, simple station for local services to facilitate development at Teeside Park.

Maybe I'm letting my dislike of Houchen overshadow the proposal. I don't like his opinion on HS2 and he seems to over estimate what will be achieved from the money being transfered to local schemes. The Tees Valley Metro is a good idea. Spending money on electrification, ordering class 398/399s, and increasing the local rail service to turn up and go would be a prerequisite for the development of new stations in the area.

I think most of us have similar feelings about Houchen tbh. Agreed with the intercity trains, I suppose they could ditch Thornaby though, it's pretty much in the middle of nowhere.

Who knows, with Teesside there's been talking of Hydrogen trains for the place for years now, but nothing has ever come from it and with the capacity improvements at both Darlington and Hartlepool currently being built, who knows what might come. You can't really trust much Houchen says really.

I’m far from local but isn’t Thornaby pretty handy for a lot of offices, a university/college, and in walking distance of housing and Stockton town centre?
If they redevelop the marshalling yards I don’t suppose they will move the main lines so they are a shorter straighter route from Thornaby eastward?
How much of the yards will be retained - is any of it needed? it seems a prime position for an intermodal terminal for Teesside.

Sort of, it depends how far you class as close though, it's about 0.5 mile to the nearest house and around 0.8 mile to Stockton town centre. Not sure what the state of the university is nowadays though, I know in the past they wanted to move everything into Durham and I don't blame them. Can't imagine the typical Durham student being exactly excited about the idea of living in Teesside.

Bus integration towards the place is terrible though, https://www.google.com/maps/@54.557...pitch=0&thumbfov=100!7i16384!8i8192?entry=ttu - this is the main bus stop for all services, excluding the X12, heading towards Stockton. Not particularly ideal. Middlesbrough isn't particularly great either as it's quite out of the way of everything aswell, so if there was some form of bus interchange, I could see it being quite popular.

Unsure on the yards though if I had to be honest.

In order to understand what is going on, you need to understand the politics of the area. Teesside Park was created by the Teesside Development Corporation (TDC), a Conservative organisation in the late 80’s, Local Labour councils at time refused to work with the TDC to such an extent that the TDC were given their own planning authority in order to get things done, creating Teesside Park,Tees Barrage, Durham University campus and surrounding areas etc. Lot’s of things were in the pipe line, none of which involved the local Labour Councils. But When Labour won the 1997 election, they disbanded the the TDC and created One NorthEast, who spent most of their money in Newcastle/Gateshead.
Over the next 20 years, rather than develop the TDC ideas, any thing the TDC did was starved of investment, I suspect in the hope these areas would fail.
Roll on 2023, and here we are again, a Conservative (Mayor)given a load of money to spend, Local Councils reluctant to accept a Conservative “handout”, so Conservative comes up with ideas to circumvent local Labour council.
On a side note, Stockton Borough Council have recently bought Dunedin House, and are planning to make it the new Stockton Borough Council office’s, and are marketing it as part of Stockton High St redevelopment with both sides of the river being classed as Stockton, so expect another push for Thornaby station to be renamed Stockton to reflect the nearby (future ) Stockton area. Future rename Thornaby for Stockton, then just Stockton.

Is there a schematic map available showing where, in the locality, the proposed station would be sited?

So what would the existing Stockton station be renamed as....Stockton North? In which case Thornaby might be better being renamed as Stockton South.

I think you are are over thinking it - they mean either a new station or a bus link
It is hard to see how a convenient 'link' to Teesside Park could be created, its a long way, but it makes a good selling point for the project
It cant - see above
I feel it's creating too many potential intercity stations within a couple of miles though
Neither this suggested station nor Thornaby are intercity station - People aint coming from anywhere other than Darlo or Saltburn or Stockton for Tessdie park! And those come by car - it is next to the A66/A19 junction for a reason.

Teesside Park does need better public transport but than can be delivered by local bus from local towns.

Not that i have seen - i think this is pie in the sky
I just can't imagine a train station at Teesside Park. Where's it going to go?!
It can only go along Stockton Road and ideally between the flyover and the river. You also have tp provide access over Stockton road THEN the A66 THEN the park roads! It wont happen.
