Regarding the station signage, I think I saw somewhere that SWT have been ordered by someone (or DDA) to change the signage from black text on white background to white text on dark background. And there was an announcement a while a go saying they are spending money on new signage. Might be old news that one though...

Hmm well brockenhurst had mostly new but the welcome sign was the old style. As the station is being refurbished perhaps new signs are then installed. I think swt plastered over the old nse signs so theu havent stood the test of time. On another note do all the fgw 150s carry internal advertising now?

ml: I have made this post, becuase atm your threads and posts are a bit random. so I hope this may help :)

A thread called 'bournemouth trip' in Traction & Rolling Stock about station signs is not going to get you as many well-informed replies as something like this (Not that lewisrday's isn't!):
'SWT Station signs?' posted in Infrastructure because:
a) People know what the thread is about and might know something about it
b) If I happened to know a lot on station sign for example, a thread about a Bournemouth trip in traction & rolling stock will make me think that is going to be about stock, not something I can help with.

Also, when you have a thread, like this entitled 'Bournemouth trip', posting do FGWs 150/1s carry advertising, is not going to get as many well-informed replies as if it was in a relevant thread with a relevant thread, for reasons similar to reason b above

I take extensive notes on such things (my God, what's wrong with me?). On the 'southern' half of their network (i.e. down to Woking, Hampshire, Pompey etc), most of the stations now bear the navy and white signage, all will be done evntually I feel.

SWML to Farnborough:
New signage: Vauxhall, Queenstown Rd, Earlesfield, Raynes Park, New Malden, Surbiton, Esher, Walton-on-Thames to Wsst Byfleet, Farnborough.
Old signage: All others.

Many south of Farnborough have been done too: Soton Airport, Soton Central, Ashurst, but many are still un-done: Woking, Totton etc.

Many still retain the massive white 'Welcome to.......' signs.

I cannot comment out beyond Staines, but many on the Hounslow Loop and via Richmond have been done to.

Not as far as I remember. The SWT new signs were just a new design for use during refurbishment - doing the work sometimes coincided with stations that were already being given an 'access for all' makeover - but others have been done without the associated tactile paving and stuff like that.

Subsequently a decision made by Adonis's better stations 'taskforce' was that all signs throughout the country would be gradually changed to the same white lettering on Navy Blue, and they would no longer be altered at franchise changes.

TOCs will still be allowed to add a minimal branding, other signs such as 'welcome to' or sponsored signs such as 'home of' will also still be allowed in addition.

This still going to be the case?

Many stations being done up now merely inherit the TOC's own branding, look at ScotRail on the A-B and all around the Overground (or are those two exempt? I could see why in those cases).

I agree LO is definitely an exemption, but once it's done it will similarly not change, ie it is a TfL brand rather than LOROL's. I think Transport Scotland's (TS's) decision to standardise was possibly the precedent for the DfT team's idea. TS seem to have stuck with blue lettering on white though, with the reverse on fascias for some reason. 'Scotrail' is a brand of TS now though, not First.

On the DfT's website they add "We recognise that additional funding will be very limited up to 2014 and we propose that the time is used to introduce minimum station standards into every new franchise and exploit all existing funding channels to prioritise the problem stations highlighted."

So I expect that any national signage rollout will not start to happen until a new franchisee is in place - and if the franchisee changes the previous colours will probably disappear faster than if the incumbent wins.

You could change the thread title yourself, and ask one of the Mods to move this to Infrastrusture if you wanted to.

Matt2010- I'm obsessed by such matters too. Stations such as sholing really need new signs welcome to sho!

Indeed. The majority of SWT's old signs looked very neglected, as did the 'Welcome to...........' boards. Since the navy and white signs have been erected, many of the 'Welcome' signs have been scrapped, and many stations do look better for it.

The vinyl on many of Totton's station signs is peeling back to reveal the original SWT design.

The dark blue signs are actually brand new, rather than vinyl. Some stations have just received new nameboards, whereas others have received a full compliment of new signs, for example, at Ashurst, we have new platform number signs and nameboards, but the "Way Out" and "Help Point" signs are in fading NSE livery.

On my Bournemouth trip I noticed the following:

Havant, Bedhampton, Hilsea and Fratton adorn the new look signage in all its glory. All goes downhill when Cosham is reached. Not only is the signage poor but the paintwork etc is all in poor condition. I am also surprised FGW stops here for surely it is a lesser station anbd one I know to be frequented by anti social behaviour.

Portchester is even worse... signage missing!

Fareham has the new signage (hurray)

All stations between there and Southampton have some of the worst signage with Sholing 'Sho' and the signs at Bursledon and Hamble so faded you can't even read them. Netley station could really do with a face lift.

I notice a new overbridge at St Denys, the only sign of improvement?... Wakefield Kirkgate the worst in the North how about St Denys the worst station in the South for that once grand now languishing feel?

Southampton has new signage except the platform 4 entrance which has faded signage.

All stations through to Totton carry old signage and yes Totton is amongst the worst. Ashurst (New Forest) and Beaulieu Road have new signage.

The following stations were a complete hit and miss wiuth Christchurch looking like it must have last seen any refresh a good ten years ago.

Regarding traction was very impressed with the class 444 very quiet in comparison to 377s.

Ash Vale has the new signs on the subway, but last time I was there there weren't any on the platform. The subway signs were good, though: a full compliment of "Platform 1 for trains to London via Woking or Ascot"-sort signs and a "way out" sign with directions to "North Camp station for trains to Gatwick Airport and Reading."

Farnborough and Camberley have the new signs, too, although when they were first installed at the latter they weren't fitted properly, meaning the little "1" sign attached to the lamp post on Platform 1 fluttered (viz. creaked and squealed) about in the wind.

There isn't a new bridge.

There's a temporary prefabricated bridge in place while the existing bridge structure is shrouded for blasting and corrosion repairs - then it will be repainted and brought back into use.

I note my local station - Wimbledon - is finally getting the new SWT signage .. but in the process they have uncovered the old 'Network South East - Welcome to Wimbledon' signage ... nice blast from the past!

SWT said in their Spring Update newsletter that they had about thirty stations left to do, and hoped to finish them by the end of this month, I think. I noticed Clapham Jn's p3-6 with the new signs whilst p7-13 (?) had the old white signs!

Despite the new Brighton Yard entrance at Clapham Jn I noticed the other day they still have signs up on at least the P7/P8 island informing passengers that there's no exit from the station that way...

One thing I've noticed down in the South Hants area is that even when the new signage is done on most of a station there are still SWT style 'large name boards' at the platform ends. Wonder if they'll alter the signs on the SN platforms at Clapham Jn? There's little consistency, only a few miles away at Wimbledon they have SWT signage on the whole station including the LU platforms...

Ash was done a few months ago, but there still remains one solitary old sign on one of the platforms. I wonder if it's been forogtten about?

Who runs Clapham Junction? I remember in the past Connex and SWT seemed to share it so you had two liveries!

Am I right SWT have taken control of it?

Another poster on here said the welcome to signs will remain separate as they will still be allowed to encompass corporate signage? This new signage is the new standard for all TOCs? Having said that this only applies to signage needing renewal to reduce costs.

SWT white signage was amended a few years ago but it hasn't lasted well at all as it appears to be a new layer stickered over the old layer (black writing instead of blue)

A sign at Hamble and a sign at Sholing are damaged to beyond recognition whilst the Bursledon signage is very faded

PS Woolston has been painted but it is a shame they have not seen to the red seating or the smashed up signal box yet. Netley station looks shoddy these days... I realise these are unstaffed stations though

SWT have always managed the whole station since privatisation - SN (and maybe LO - not sure) provide staff only on their dedicated platforms.

This is fairly normal practice at some busier stations where there is a clear demarcation of TOCs on different platforms, for example Milton Keynes is an LM managed station but there are Virgin dispatch staff on the fast platforms.

I like it that Brockenhust still has the old Southern Region green, British Railway nameboards on the Lymington platform. Pity they couldn't keep the 2 old EMU's going.

Has Rowlands Castle been done yet? Last time I passed through it 2 or 3 years ago it was by far the worst on the entire Portsmouth Line; most of the signs had faded to completely white and were just unreadable.
