Currently on the up on a Virgin Pendo between New Street and Cov and not closed. Appears to be a problem on the down at Stechford with no trains going beyond International.

London Midland website suggests there was an obstruction on the line in the Stechford area but the National Rail website suggests that services are running as normal now.

Can believe its vandalism as they like to throw things on the line in that area.

Was closed from about 9:30 till about 11:30 as a LM train had hit a fence panel on the down at Stechford and was "disabled". Fitters came from New Street but couldn't fix it. More fitters came and managed to get it on the move.

Most Virgin services went to International where one terminated, the others went through. London Midland Services terminated at Coventry/International to turn back.
The 08:50 from Euston arrived at New Street an hour late.

Some services cancelled.

350124 was the unit involved.

The trains around Birmingham New St have been quite unfortunate today with a fatality between Birmingham New St and Wolverhampton at around 1300 meant that trains were being deleyed left right and centre :|

Although by around 1200, The services from Euston were only being deleyed by around 10 minutes.

Further woes for that area tonight - an explosion in a chemical plant has apparently closed the line south of Rugby (according to a friend of mine on a train!) :(

Makes me glad I stayed at home today! There always seems to be a problem at Rugby though

Was wondering if there would be a thread on this.

Not sure on it happening at half 9 though - I arrived at International (from the North) at about 11:30 (the XC service to Didcot Parkway)

I didn't see anything amiss en-route and arrived into what seemed complete mayhem at International with trains showing "Delayed" and "Cancelled" left, right and centre. That included the ATW Shrewsbury service 9which had yet to arrive - so suspect it was affecting both lines and they maybe terminated the ATW short)

The announcements indicated something had just happened (in so much as the annoucement came for the VT service on Pl 3 to Wolverhampton saying they had just been informed that there was an obstruction on the line near Stetchford and therefore the train service had been cancelled/was terminating at International

At Rugby:

About 8:00, police arrived and blocked the road at the station entrance.
Fire at a warehouse next to the station (across the road).
Gas cylinders in the warehouse.
Trains stopped on the line.
Trains were suspended out of Euston.
Station evacuated.
Trains turned back at Milton Keynes.
London Midland ran a shuttle to Stafford from Nuneaton (I think).

Tickets are valid today (21.02.2011).
Heard police were still there this morning.
Rugby has no running water this morning, possible Fire Brigade damaged pipes yesterday getting emergency water to the fire?

I was on the 0930 from Northampton to Birmingham New Street. We had an announcement at Coventry just after 1000 that we might be delayed due to vandalism on the line (and waited a few minutes before departing) and then another at Birmingham International that the train was going no further. We were told train tickets would be valid on the local bus services.

This is where it got dangerous - obviously a lot of people headed for the buses. After leaving the rail station proper I didn't see any rail or airport staff. There's an escalator leading down to the Northbound bus stop. People were piling onto it before realising that due to work being done at the bottom of the escalator we were all heading for a very small space which already had a lot of people in it. We did manage to get word back up the escalator so someone could press the emergency stop. An alarm started and continued for nearly half an hour with no staff apparently concerned.

As it was a Sunday there was only a half-hourly bus service to Birmingham. The queues building up were enormous - it quite surprised me that there were no rail staff supervising or coming to see how it was going as more and more trains were being emptied there. I was lucky enough to have only waited 40 minutes and just got the 1100 to Birmingham.

Chimes exactly with my experience. I was on the 1000 LM from Northampton to Birmingham New St, got turfed at Birmingham International (the train manager having been EXCELLENT with information - credit to him) at approx 1115 to be greeted by a complete absence of either staff (except two in the ticket office) or information except semi-audible tannoy annoucements were saying tickets were valid on WM buses. They did NOT provide information on which buses actually went to Birmingham, from where or when! I asked at the ticket window and de facto found myself performing the role of information provider! I managed (just!) to get on a heaving 1130 bus. This was a normal service bus, which had already run to Birmingham Airport from Coventry and it seems operated at 30 min frequency on Sunday - NOTHING was apparently done to provide additional buses despite the fact the incident had been going on for two hours!

Not exactly the greatest experience and I was 30mins late for the football match I was going to (the name gives a big clue!)
