Has anyone been at New Street today? There has been a power failure for most of the day with minimal announcements, no CIS and emergency lighting only. Lifts, toilets, shops and ticket office all closed as well due to no power. It was quite strange with all the lights off and loads of staff standing around to provide information on platforms.

I'm tempted to go and have look now! I wonder if anyone's taken any pictures?

It'll be interesting to hear whether those contractors are to blame again...

Just come off the phone from [m=bournvillian]5966[/m].

He said that they have had to/had to close the station to all trains, therefore all trains which terminate there did so at their previous calling station & through trains went straight through.
The failure was not affecting Overhead Wires.

Due to the lack of lighting and disability access (due to the lifts being out of use), also that there weren't any display boards operating.

Rail Tickets were/are being accepted on buses & trams.

They have not closed the station to trains, there are still plenty running past as they have been all day but there are huge numbers of cancellations and delays, particularly to local services. I didn't take any pictures as I didn't think they'd show much, the flash on my camera would probably make the place look normal and not using the flash would have been too dark. I'm sure someone with a better camera might have better luck.

Not intended rude.

He said that (in other words as above), No Trains are Calling at BHM.

Sorry, only typing what he said.

Are passengers boarding / alighting?

If so, can penalty fares apply when travelling from New St?
As there are no ticket purchasing facility's available, unless, there are guards with their Mobile Devices?!

Yes I saw a number of trains loading and unloading at New Street when I was there for a while.

The LM staff on the gateline were selling tickets (no ticket checks though), and there was an XC RPI and a Senior Conductor as well in the middle of the concourse. I'm sure tickets would have been sold on the trains.

Id imagine a lot of the services terminating there couldnt stop short as you couldnt turn them back unless they went ECS to the station. Id be suprised if XC services didnt stop as they would reverse there anyway. I can imagine the passengers being well chuffed if they pulled in and stopped and waited booked time only to be told they couldnt alight !!

Definately being used as I turned up from Leeds at 17.27 and managed to get the 17.30 Virgin train to Coventry (just as well I am a regular at New St or I would have missed it). Loads of people milling around the arrival from Leeds but disconcerting to find a lot of the doors at the bottom of the stairs shut. Understand the station was closed from about 09.00 - 09.30 this morning.

I was due to visit Brum today, but a migraine stopped that from happening... looks like my "lucky week" is still going! :)

From XC
Local power failure - there are currently no lifts or escalators working. Any customers requiring assistance please contact Birmingham New Street [numbers removed] or contact CSC. Please consider using alternative locations for customers to maintain connections. Ticket office unable to issue any tickets - please retail full range of tickets on board and allow customers to travel with reference numbers. Stations please advise our Senior Conductors accordingly. Also no CIS screens working and limited PA announcements.

I was delayed by the New Street power failure today by 1 hour 10 minutes, my train was terminated at Wolverhampton, I had to get a Midland Metro to The Hawthorns, train to Moor Street and walk. The only departure screen working was the one for 4c and as already said, shops closed, departure screens off except the one already mentioned and emergency lighting was in operation.

The power failure was caused by a water leek and the station was evacuated.

There's been water dripping onto the east end of platform 8 for a while (I've stood under it on too many occasions :p ), I blame that!

Sniper, do you mean the drip under the road bridge where there is a large but flat stalacmite slowly building up on the platform?

All the clocks were stuck on 18.59.

Here's a few of the pics I took:

Haha, nope, I think that's one of New Street's many other water features. My regular shower has only managed to form quite a bit of mold so far. :p

Many thanks for the pictures Mojo, how incredibly eerie it looks, especially on the main concourse!

Latest info I have; lights are now working, still no ticket office, no lifts/escalators, CIS working on main concourse but not on the bridge. Customers with Advance tickets may travel using their reference number as no TVMs.

Due to the requirement, but lack of proper break facilities for traincrew, 221103 was used as a mobile messroom for all TOC traincrew. It was dispensing free refreshments to the no doubt confused/ill-informed staff. Wish I'd got shots of that.

Was that a question?

This thread is only made up of two pages, there's not exactly much to catch up on to find out the answer. :p

Speaking of eerie, I like the way the poster in the background says Ghost

You would have found it a lot quicker to read the thread than to ask the questions! :D

Why do I get the feeling that with their reputations (NR, VT, VXC) that it is not unusual to keep passengers in the dark?
