Apologies if this has been done to death, but I was curious as to how many new stations have been opened in recent years and how that compared to stations that have closed. I am specifically asking about recent history, the last 15 years or so, so I guess that privatisation is as good a cut off point as any. Stations that were sanctioned to be built under BR but didnt open until privatisation are fine to include. Heavy rail on the national network only please.

So, how many new stations have opened?
How many stations have closed?

Of the new stations that have opened, how many of them were built to replace a station that was closing (Smethwick Galton Bridge replaced Smethwick West, which is less than five minutes walk away) how many of them were old stations reopening after a number of years and how many of them were brand new.

Sounds like I am trying to get people to do my homework for me, but it's something I have often wondered about.

This list of closed stations was correct in 2006. Need to do a bit more research from there, don't think it mentions stations on the Oldham Loop or Workington North etc.

The 2006 list omits Stretford (last day of service 24DEC1991).

Also Pendleton is mis-spelt.
