Long time lurker, first time poster!

With the economic climate collapsing like a souflee in a cupboard, the DfT budget is likely to be slashed somewhat. What future do you see for, among other things tucked away in the various RUC documents, the opening of new stations?

I am particularly interested for Lancashire, where I have been banging on about the need for new stations here for years.

As a Lancashireman, I too would like to see more stations open round here. Buckshaw Village is the only close thing we've got here, and I doubt that will open this year. Aside from that, the Todmorden Curve looks a lobng way off too :D

Well as a Yorkshireman I can assure you Matt that Todmorden is not, has never been and will never be, in Lancashire.

Aye, ain't it just! Buckshaw (has it got a three letter code yet?) has been pushed back further into 2011.

When I think about the population centres around here which could benefit - Cottam Sports Arena, Midge Hall and Coppull being three- I weep at the lost chances over the year to swtich over to rail travel. I know Preston is leaning towards trams in the long-term, but don't know how much improvement will come from this.

What ever became of the Connecting Communities (and arguably Merseytravel) ideas to reintroduce the railway to Skelmersdale? I'll be damned if I have to go (through) there on a bus again; the 375/385/395 - all long-distance routes - go all over the place!

The North West RUC certainly recommends returning railways to Skem, but I don't know what real terms efforts are being made by Lancashire CC or the rail companies.

Merseytravel was pushing for this quite a lot until this so called 'economic decline' started.

This image is a good source of potential new stations. All the 'circled' ones are new.

That is a very useful - and, er ambitious! - map. Thank you for that.

I notice "Headbolt Lane" is there as fact, is that station a certainty then? I know there was a lot of tallk if not action on that one....

Ah I've noticed that too.

It is more a matter of when, not if.

Will certainly be there within 2 years though I would imagine.

Didn't Warren close about a hundred years ago? I would think it's highly unlikely there'd be another one! And where's the Town Meadow station we have heard so much about?

Has the Todmorden Curve re-opening been quashed now?

they've talked about it for years, but just love their consultancies, cost to benefit ratios and 150 page reports about advantages and disads too much. JUST GET ON WITH IT :D

Todmorden has never been and will never be, in Lancashire.
It was part of Old Lancashire before the 1974 local government boundaries were redrawn. Indeed Tomorden cricket club still play in the Lancashire League !

Not that this will affect the cost of the reinstatement of the Todmorden curve, or even explain why 450 metres of track will cost 7 million !

It seems to take too long to get a project going.... once announced years before work begins.... it should be less than that and also that would cut costs by not having so long paying people to report...

Ain't that the truth. "Yes Minister" is effectively a documentary, as true now as ever.

Correct, the historic border was/is the River Calder which runs right through Todmorden.

It is true that part of the historic county boundary was once formed by the River Calder and by its tributary, Walsden Water, which flows under Todmorden town hall. But the salient word is "historic" as since 1 January 1888 the whole of Todmorden has been in Yorkshire, the boundary since that time having roughly followed the Pennine watershed. From 1888 to 31 March 1974, the town was in the West Riding of Yorkshire and since 1 April 1974 it has been in the present-day West Yorkshire. I find it rather surprising that after having been a 100% Yorkshire town for over 122 years, there are still folk who believe it to be "half Yorks, half Lancs".

Being a native of Todmorden who worked in Burnley for a number of years in the late 1950s/early 1960s, I travelled over the Todmorden curve quite often before its passenger service was withdrawn in 1965. Its curvature was extremely sharp, causing much squealing from the wheels of the early generation DMUs as they negotiated it at slow speed. Nevertheless it should never have been taken up and would be a useful reinstatement today, as would a new Todmorden North station in the region of the former Stansfield Hall station, which stood just beyond the Northern end of the curve.

I thought my map was extensive

Couldn't they have thought of a more imaginative name than "Anglican Cathedral" though?

That will never be built, nor do I think there will ever be a passenger service from Edge Hill to Vauxhall. Both lines would be pointless and highly unpopular if they ever adopted the plan which involvied diverting Wigan / St. Helens services away from Liverpool Lime Street, instead depositing passengers well away from the city centre shopping & business areas, (unless they endured a time-wasting change of trains at an interchange station.)

New Station in Lancashire, well I know that Buckshaw Village is going ahead on the saite of the old Euxton ROF Station site. But there are a couple of others that might be helpful.

1. Coppull. Before some short sited prat decided that 4 tracks were not needed between Balshaw Lane & Standish on the West Coast ML. It would have been easy to restore a station that was right in the middle of the village of Coppull.

2. Midge Hall. Now that new housing has been built near the former site of this station on the Preston - Ormskirk line, the potential for a decent service from there to Preston.

3. Wrea Green. Again a small station on a branch line, which is very close (walking distance) to the centre of the Village. It is the only former station on the Kirkham to Blackpool South line that has not yet been reopened.

These three I feel have a good chance of getting a good number of users, and I am sure that other could also name others.

Yes, "historic" as in "has a lot of history", not "historical" which means "in the past".
as since 1 January 1888 the whole of Todmorden has been in Yorkshire, the boundary since that time having roughly followed the Pennine watershed.
For administrative purposes, the boundary of the administrative county of York, West Riding was drawn away from the historic boundary.
since 1 April 1974 it has been in the present-day West Yorkshire.
Not "in" present-day "West Yorkshire", but administered by Calderdale Metropolitan Borough Council and between 1974 and 1986 also administered by "West Yorkshire Metropolitan County Council".
I find it rather surprising that after having been a 100% Yorkshire town for over 122 years, there are still folk who believe it to be "half Yorks, half Lancs".
That's because we haven't all been brainwashed into believing the administrative boundaries, which are in a constant state of flux, define where a place actually is.

Since someone has resurrected this thread, it is perhaps worth noting that Town Meadow has been "made a priority" for Merseyside's next LTP, so should get on track (excusing the pun of course) within the foreseeable future.

I'd support all three.

That line between St Helens Central and Junction really should be reopened.. The infrastructure is still there IIRC and would benefit those who now live at the new end of the town.
