A further 1250 to 2500 people (2.5 people per house) with rail usage of a high 10% would give you an annual station usage of 30,000 to 70,000. Hardly enough to justify a new station.

It'll be interesting to see what the initial results will be for the current station, however, if it's made it this far then someone in a big office somewhere thought it was a good idea, and then others agreed, however, I think a station at Marsh Barton is much more crucial, as the roads around there are terrible all day! and again a more frequent service to Pinhoe and Cranbrook, even if its just an extra shuttle every half an hour or so

Probably terrified the oiks will slow his service down to the Promised Land;)

Edginswell is an odd one - it's ready to go, but the car park was rejected. Not really ideal, but hopefully it'll encourage more hospital staff to use rail to get in.

Since you put it that way, yes.

Stonehouse with its population of 7000 wants a second station? Whilst Quedgeley 5 miles up the road with its population of 17000 (plus another 7000 in Hardwicke and Kingsway next door) doesn't get a look in :(

Where exactly would you locate a new station to serve Quedgeley? Naas Lane? There are only a limited number of locations where the railway line is accessible from a road and where there is also space next to the railway line for platforms/footbridge/car park etc and these are quite a walk from the main residential estates.

Warrington West would be my closest station so I'd like to see it built. However, has the business case been weakened due to the Chat Moss line being electrified? Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought trans Pennine services would soon not use the southern CLC line?

Warrington West features (in grey writing) on maps in northern units suggesting that it's opening soon...

Going back to the point made in the OP about two of the current approvals, is December 2016 now the current target date for the openings of both Kenilworth and of Ilkeston stations?

That's the plan for Ilkeston - certainly the platforms have now sprung up. It might even happen!

Well if it is, they better get a move on as it's just a patch of waste land now in the middle of a housing estate. :)

You would think so - a huge load more housing currently in progress around Nog Tow , Cottam, Lightfoot Lane etc. Plus you already have the conurbations of Lea and Ashton.

Finding a good location for a station does not appear to be easy here either, you can either have a station on a main road a long walk from the nearest residential areas, or a station on quiet residential street serving a small residential estate with no provision for car park etc. The various housing estates are not connected to each other very well and there are few road crossings of the railway line to provide good links to the areas on either side. A station on Tom Benson Way would probably serve Cottam as well as is possible, but not the residential areas to the south.

Since the railway runs alongside Tom Benson way for well over a mile, your suggestion (which I've bolded) could be interpreted in a lot of different ways! :)

I would have thought if you want to serve the highest number of people, the most sensible place for a station would be where Blackpool Road crosses the line, which would put the station within easy walking distance of a lot of houses (although it wouldn't really be a 'Cottam' station then ;) ) If you wanted a car park, it would presumably mean losing a bit of Haslam Park though - I'm guessing that may be worth it if you could tempt a reasonable number of motorists to park-and-ride there rather than driving into the centre of Preston. That location has the advantage that it could serve people coming both from Cottam and from places towards Ashton along Blackpool Road.
