New station planned for St.Fagans?

I have just been reading a report prepared by consultants in relation to Cardiff's Local Development plan. I see that a new station is planned for the main line at St.Fagans.

Whilst I realise that this would be most useful - especially for visiting the Welsh History Museum at St.Fagans Castle, I do wonder if an additional stop can be made on this busy line?

Did Cardiff Council / Consultants actually converse with Network Rail about this?

It is now 53 years since the railway station of St Fagans was closed in 1962. Have some of the original artifacts from that station been stored at the Welsh National History Museum in that locality?

Never heard of any, and to be honest I doubt it. At that time lots of things were destroyed with no thought to history

Internal indications are that no, they didn't.

Whilst I can't find any statements from NR about this at the moment, I can point out that SEWTA had this on their list of plans for several years. It's not just a recent brainstorm by the council.

If ever a station at St.Fagans did come about, it would probably be built just to the west of the level crossing with a linking footbridge over the Ely to the Museum. That being so, then surely people would drive off the A4232 into St.Fagans Museum car park & then walk back across the footbridge to use the train for the 6 minute or so hop into Cardiff Central. So, the Museum would have to find a way of stopping such people filling up their car park - or additional parking would have to be created thus spoiling the local environment.

The railways would have the problem of loads of people cramming onto trains from such a St.Fagans Park & Ride whilst at the same time losing custom from such passengers who might have boarded trains further west.

The Cardiff LDP proposes a Park & Ride coming off the north side of M4 J33 & then using buses to ferry people to central Cardiff. The last thing that J33 needs is a P&R on its north side - along with the proposed business park.

So much for Cardiff Council taking advice from 'consultants'!

I've no time for costly consultants. Back in BR days when I was working, a couple of recently retired people would be invited to come in and work on a project - people who had the experience in the particular field and knew what they were talking about.

Surely that's easily dealt with by parking restriction, either by time limitation alone or coupled with windscreen display for museum entrance if day-long visit is required?

You already have to purchase and display a car park ticket at the Museum. The only way it could be done as you propose would be to purchase a car park ticket inside the Museum, but as there is no entry charge to the Museum they would have to employ people to do that.

And what time restriction would you apply? I bet most visitors to the Museum spend all day there. Last time we went it took us 2 days to get around it all and we still didn't see all in the actual Castle building.

And I do know of people who have parked there and caught the bus into the city!

The former station at Raglan has been demolished and is in storage, and will be rebuilt at the nearby National History Museum in St. Fagans "sometime after 2019" according to the most recent report I've seen.
