Just had a new sign put up at Sleights, can anyone tell me what it is for?

It’s a sign for the crossing

FPW is Footpath with wicket gates
MBW3 is the engineer line reference - MBW is Middlesbrough to Whitby and 3 refers to the portion between Grosmont Junction and Whitby
And the easy bit is Miles and Chains from the zero point which is probably Middlesbrough

The zero point is the former Rillington Junction.

I would have said the zero point was at Guisborough Junction near to where the branch line for Nunthorpe / Whitby diverges from the Up Main line to the east of Middlesbrough. However, reckon you're correct and so includes track mileage from Rillington Junction to Pickering that is no longer there.

The main line was originally Pickering, then to York, the Esk Valley from Picton was much later so there are a few changes of milage along the current Esk Valley.

Indeed. Whilst there is a zero mileage point in the vicinity of Guisborough Junction, there are discontinuities in the mileage figures on the Esk Valley line at both Battersby and Grosmont stations. Think nowadays, it's actually just over 31 and three-quarter miles by rail from Guisborough Junction to Sleights station.

If you look at the Sectional Appendix properly, there are mileage changes at Battersby and Grosmont. Only the first portion of the route is measured from Guisborough Junction.
