Two new locos for me today (1st March 2014). 57314 & 57315 at Dalmarnock headed for Bristol Temple Meads from Fort William, 40 minutes behind 55022 which was headed for Kilmarnock. Argyle Street was choking to death when I passed through later.

Only had one new sighting so far this year, which is disappointing as I still have a lot of stuff unticked but then pleasing as it means I'm actually getting somewhere with seeing everything on the mainline. So then, my first entry for Black Pen 2014

Way too much to list following many trips this year, but included are about 13 377/6s, a 377/5, a couple of 70s, a few 507s, about 4 508s, a few 313/2s, many LU 2009 and S stock sets and probably some other stuff too. Oh aye, and some 08s, 31s, 47s, 56s and 73s as well.

Going to try and keep this more up-to-date than I have previously!

I summarised because I simply don't bother making detailed logs of sightings these days. Long gone are the days when an unexpected sighting would take up several lines in my notebook, like when I saw 350109 stabled at Stoke-on-Trent back in 2004 or 2005, well before they were used through that area and I think still a while before they entered passenger service. That sighting took up a fair bit more space and ink to note it and the joy of seeing it than would now occur!

I considered documenting sightings at the same time I started documenting journeys, but decided against it, as it's pretty labour intensive. The only units I decided I'd document sightings for were newly delivered units on routes I regularly use, which for now just means S stock. It will certainly include 345s when they appear, I might consider documenting 700s as well, not sure yet :)

Black pen for April & May:
11th April - S7 set 57
19th April - S7 set 24 on circle line
25th April - S7 set 36 on circle line, S7 set 52 on District line, S7 set 39 on circle line, S7 set 55 on District line
28th April - S7 set 26 on circle line, S7 set 20 on District line, S7 set 56, S7 set 51 on circle line, S7 set 58
15th May - S7 set 60
19th May - S7 set 59
28th May - 92071 seen in Magnum livery

Sorry, explain? 345s? I know of the impending 377/7s (about time too), the 350/3s (again, about darn time!), the 458/5s en-masse (I might see a few of them before I turn 40, and travel on some before I turn 50. Yes that is exaggerating massively!), the 387s and 700s. However 345s has me lost, what have I missed now?

I found some old notebooks recently, and in one of them I found my old sightings logs. The logic being at the time I'd have notes telling me where I first saw something, although that would take some serious effort. The huge effort in making and processing my observations for the 'Trains you've seen working' thread is enough for me now!

Also, when did this thread get re-named from 'Black Pen 2014'?

345s are crossrail stock, but prior to the opening of crossrail will replace the 315s on the GE metro services, which I use from time to time. Since they're stock on my local route, I'll definitely be recording sightings of them.

Oh yes, now I remember. Extreme memory fail, although I also put blame with so much new stuff coming up that it's easy to lose track of what's what

I foresee a lot of Liverpool Street to Stratford journeys coming up in the coming years

Yeah I can understand that. For me it's likely to be Stratford to home, so I should pick up some good mileage on them - only if by then they do enough to lessen overcrowding on that route though. As it is today, 8-car 315s running 6tph beyond Gidea Park in the peak is thoroughly unpleasant until Goodmayes.

I've heard peak times are less than fun on the GEML, never experienced it myself but would give it a try one day to score more 315s quickly!

New sights lately for me:

No you wouldn't :p

The fast services aren't as bad, though the Southend ones are still quite busy.
If you're going to do it, get on at Liverpool Street for a chance of a seat - getting on at Stratford is one of those situations where being in the right position on the platform is the difference between making it on board or not, and where dwell times are routinely extended by 60s+ for people not understanding they won't fit...

I'll take your word for it then! If I was to do it, festering at Stratford for winners then choosing which train to jump on would be the way so not worth it by the looks of it! I'll stick to hunting them down on the Enfield Town and Shenfield services off-peak, probably a bit easier

Plenty of stuff to add here, took me forever to find the thread but here we go!

15th June 2014

350373
377705 (first one of the sub-class I've seen)
377702
379002
379022 (now finished the class for sight :D)
Quite a few Tube trains but I didn't note those into my notebook, apart from Victoria line stock 11014, 11017 and 11018.

16th June 2014

20107
350370
350371
377605
377704
375829 (just 375901 to find for sight now to clear the class :D)

The following aren't in numerical order (after the Viccy and Northern lines, as they're in order of formation on the day, as with the Central line and in order of sight on the day, as is the case with the Jubilee and Metropolitan lines)

Victoria line stock noted for winning sight: 11015, 11016, 11030, 11041, 11042, 11055, 11056

Northern line stock noted for winning sight: 51595, 51715

Central line stock noted for winning sight: 91263, 93094, 93426, 92109, 91093, 93406, 93410, 91223, 91253, 92074, 92440, 92107

Jubilee line stock noted for winning sight: 96103, 96099, 96012, 96105, 96059, 96031, 96125, 96066, 96109, 96102, 96123, 96018

Metropolitan line stock noted for winning sight: 21057+21058, 21033+21034, 21035+21036, 21011+21012, 21049+21050, 21025+21026, 21005+21006, 21027+21028, 21319+21320, 21065+21066, 21095+21096, 21111+21112, 21023+21024, 21001+21002, 21059+21060, 21075+21076, 21009+21010, 21109+21110, 21063+21064, 21015+21016, 21021+21022, 21041+21042, 21101+21102, 21113+21114, 21323+21324, 21327+21328 (you can tell I was a little busy on the Met in the morning!)

Quite a few ticks added to my NREA and ST Publications books, that's for sure! Anyone following the Red Pen 2014 thread will have seen I had a lot of stuff to underline in both books too!
