The only portions updated are sections B and C: the Routeing Point Identifier and Permitted Route Identifier. The maps, easements and group stations are unchanged. I don't have the old copy to hand for a more detailed comparison.


As an aside, ATOC will now let you download individual maps as opposed to the whole job lot.

This has always been the case under the PDF system as far as I am aware!

Section E, Easements, now also is changed. The additional Easements are:

030500 During Engineering works around Arudel w/e 29-31/08/09, journeys to Arundel from the east will be allowed via Barnham.

040003 Customers travelling from Drayton Green, Castle Bar Park, South Greenford, Hanwell, West Ealing, Ealing Broadway and Acton Main Line to Hayes & Harlington and beyond may travel via Londonb Paddington. This easement applies in both directions.

040005 Customers travelling from Bedwyn, Hungerford, Kintbury, Newbury, Newbury Racecourse, Thatcham, Midgham, Aldermaston and Theale to Didcot Parkway and beyond may travel via Reading West. This easement applies in both directions.

040007 Customers travelling from Garswood, St Helens Central, Thatto Heath, Eccleston Park and Prescot to Preston and beyond may travel via Wign North Western. This easement applies in both directions.

040009 Customers travelling from Ulverston to Carlisle using tickets routed DIRECT may not travel via Carnforth. This easement applies in both directions.

300375 Customers traveliing from Bournemouth and/or Branksome via Castle Cary may travel via Dorchester South. This easement applies in both directions.

040003 appears to be rather stupid. Passengers from Hanwell to Hayes & Harlington may travel via London Paddington. Uh?

Hanwell - London Terminals is £6.20 SDR. A £2.10 Hanwell - Hayes & Harlington SDS would now appear to offer the same journey opportunity with this easement. I know there are automatic barriers at Paddington, but if you wish to use the facilities while there...

Have I missed something or was that easement written by someone without a moment of thought?

I can't see why that was added either. They all have Wigan as a suitable routeing point, and it is the shortest route by at least 10 miles.

That doesn't make sense, to me.

People would have a hard job not travelling via Reading West, surely? No services (as far as i know) to the Didcot line from the Berks and Hants stop at Reading West, as they all reverse at Reading?

Is there a new service, or am i just missing something quite obvious?

I think the easement is trying to convey the message that passengers are permitted to take the Berks & Hants route to Didcot rather than the route via Westbury and Swindon.

I guess so. Although from Newbury i'd take the train to Reading and change there anyway (and did when i lived there) as it was quicker and the services were far more frequent (FGW local services run from Bedwyn to London every hour, and Half hour service to Reading from Newbury, in general). I wouldn't have even looked into going via Westbury & Swindon. Just seems a tad pointless to put it on there in my opinion.

It just made me wonder if this is early preperation for the Reading Station revamps, Are FGW planning to run direct services from say, Didcot and Oxford to Newbury and Basingstoke avoiding Reading?
