it's not that 92TS is an "updated" 86TS- the three, different, 86TS units were prototypes for 92TS.

Indeed, and the blue version which I seem to recall being the one they chose, seems to still be rather different to the version they actually produced.

Wouldn't that be more bother than it's worth?

96TS are 7 car (with the 7th non motored trailer inserted in the middle after the Extension project), and 95TS are 6 car.

The wording in the recent ITT for additional Northern and Jubilee line trains definitely allows for that distinct possibility, I posted the extract in the relevant thread back in August:

The apportionment of trains between each line and between the base order and options will be further defined following completion of feasibility studies and may vary from that stated. The Contracting Entity is considering the benefits of cascading trains between the Jubilee and Northern Lines. If this option is selected, the scope of the procurement may include the activities necessary to incorporate redundant trailer cars from the existing Jubilee Line trains into the new units.

Other than the traction package, are there any engineering differences between the 95TS and 96TS? And in that case, would a trailer vehicle be immediately compatible with both (Northern Line ATO reprogramming notwithstanding)?

Given the fact that the 95TS is just now receiving a fairly substantial internal refresh, I imagine they're committing to using the stock for a fair while, and why not? I'm curious if the slightly older 96TS (yes it is that way round!) will receive the same treatment as in some of the units the interior is starting to look a bit dog-eared.

The 95TS and 96TS are now maintained by different companies, one is still Alstom and the other is now LU APD. Have a guess which way round it is...

Pretty extensive differences to be honest.

Theres about three years of design evolution, correcting a lot of the 'silly mistakes' that are still present on the 96TS. Such as the de-trainment ladder design, train management computer is slightly different, wiring is slightly different throughout the train, although that's not too hard to change.

Oh, and the cab layout is quite different.

96TS going to the Northern Line would be like how the Mk.1 72TS fits in on the Bakerloo, they'll probably never interwork like the 72TS though.

I was rather hoping they'd have something a bit more like the NTfL concept going on the Jubilee/Northern. Not that there's anything wrong with the existing design per se, but the other units will be approaching 25 years old by the time the new ones arrive!

The idea of ordering "clones" for the Jubilee/Northern is to simply everything. The clones will end up having a relatively short lifespan

Or they could end up being donated to another line and the line loosing the clones get the NTfL units...

All depends on gauging and length.

NTfL for the Jubilee would also mean replacing all of the PEDs on the Extension, as the doors would no longer align, so an additional cost there that they may not want to meet at this time. At some point in the future, it will have to either be done, or order new stock with the same door configuration as the 95/96.

I didn't say Jubilee Line though did I?

The Northern Line is about to get split in two...

And they have the only fleet that has a cat in hell's chance of fitting on the Bakerloo, 92TS is too long but can do the curves, 96TS is one car too long, but 95TS has air suspension so gauging is a real issue...

Nothing for any of them scenarios will actually fit today.
