New paper ticket format

I may have missed this development, but unusually today I bought tickets from the ticket office (Wolverhampton) rather than online, and was given two thin paper tickets roughly 3". x 5", one for each leg of my return journey, rather than the credit-card sized cardboard tickets I was expecting (and which fit neatly into a phone case).

Is this a new national standard and if so, when did it start replacing the older type? Apart from the larger Aztec code, there didn't seem to be any other difference in terms of the information printed, and they obviously would not have fitted into the old-style gateline card readers.

Paper Till Roll tickets have been being rolled out for around the last 8 or 9 years. Interestingly I was sold a PRT ticket for a journey I made last Saturday which, when folded in half, was almost exactly credit card sized. Meant I could scan it at the barrier without having to remove it from my ticket wallet.

' is used to denote feet by the way, while ''/" for inches. 3ft x 5ft is the sort of size ticket you'd see from one of the Ryanair ladsladslads who have decided to print their mate's boarding passing on A0 paper.

I was quite surprised to get one of these for the first time, a couple of weeks ago.

Being able to scan them at ticket barriers (like a phone), rather than enter them in the slot is the main effective change. Going forward as card tickets are phased out, that will make ticket barriers a bit simpler to maintain.

They are fairly thick paper and fold up well, so they're better than e.g. bus tickets.

The big annoyance for me is that, once folded, the barcode and the human-readable information are on different sides - so you have to unfold if you want to check you've got the correct ticket before scanning.

Normally with these tickets I just fold it in such a way that 1) it fits in my wallet nicely and 2) so that just the barcode is visible.

Needless to say, this only works with a couple of tickets and not multiple however this is my go-to when the superior CCSTs are not available
