New Optional Ticket scanner at station

Noticed this at the station. Are they going to make them compulsory at some stage ?
The station does not have any barriers.
Everyone was looking at it like it was from outer space !
No instructions or direction in its use from anyone !
Who’s going to use when its optional ?

They've been doen here in SWT now SWR land for years, the are for smartcard based ticketing, allowing, as I understand it, some one to tap in either to register the start of a journey or to download a ticket that has been brought online.

Also now used to activate flexi seasons on smartcard. If you have a normal season ticket there's no need to tap in or out (unless you need to download the ticket to your card).

There is a delay with the production of an info poster to accompany it. They actually exist on much of the network already, but will be added to most of the remaiming EMR locations that have yet to have one.

It is primarily important for the flexi season tickets, and will also be used for collection and validation of other smart card ticket options.

They are optional at the moment, but I'd expect changes are coming in that regard eventually.

I think it would be good to have an optical scanner on them as well and require eTicket holders to validate their ticket before travel.
