Arriva, Stagecoach & First have all announced their orders for 2014/15,
Nat Exp' have made a longer term commitment to ADL, Lothian & Reading are committed short term to ADL, this leaves Go-Ahead and the London (tendered) market as the main sales opportunities, the purchase price (or Lease rates)
will need to be keen for an operator/Leasing co to take a gamble on a brand new design.

I can't understand why TfL can't just specify high definition white LED boards. They'll be as clear as blinds in terms of legibility and easier to change and update.

Agreed, but TfL tends to adopt the 'Not Invented Here' approach to anything that works successfully in the provinces (or abroad).

Yeah, like having to test a diagonal pedestrian crossing, countdown timers on crossings, or low level traffic lights for bikes. All things that don't need testing as they're ancient concepts elsewhere.
