Not sure how new this is, but at the bottom of the NRE journey planner page - http://ojp.nationalrail.co.uk/service/planjourney/search - there's a section called "Your ticket summary".
Put in origin, destination, date; and the "Route" menu will update to show the available 'route' fields for that ticket. Selecting one of those and clicking the "View Ticket Summary" button doesn't give too much additional information yet; but the URL referred contains the path "service/permittedroutes/handoff" - I wonder if this will eventually be updated to show (an attempt at) the permitted routes for the ticket selected?
