New name for Blackfriars?

Nothing too major, but TRUK reports that in August NR carried out a four week consultation for the potential renaming of Blackfriars NR station.

Following consultation, the following options have been drawn up:

If no external funding for a complete name change is put forward:
London Blackfriars (for Bankside)
London Blackfriars (for South Bank & Bankside)
London Blackfriars (for Bankside & South Bank)
London Blackfriars (for South Bank)

However, if external money is donated:
London Blackfriars - Bankside
London Blackfriars Bridge
London Blackfriars - South Bank

"London Blackfriars Bridge" sounds too awkward, and some half-wit will sooner or later confuse it with London Bridge - the next station for most trains from Blackfriars. Why can't they just keep the familiar name? If not, I think I would suggest dumping the word "London" and adding "(for the South Bank)". I would have said Victoria, for Queen Victoria Street, but something tells me that wouldn't work. What could that be?

Indeed, the following people are for the renaming:
Simon Hughes, MP for Bermondsey & Old Southwark MP;
Caroline Pidgeon, London Assembly member;
Peter John, Southwark Council leader.

They believe such a move would 'benefit local residents and businesses and boost the number of visitors to the area and its attractions'.

I'll let you make up your own mind...

Good calls everyone - genuinely made me laugh.

I only wish the crapulous politicians and local authority bigwigs really recognised how pathetic the whole exercise is. But my best guess is they are too full of their own self-importance to even consider why the general public would be reluctant to see any money (public or private) wasted on this farce.

I completely agree with you on all points. Blackfriars station has its historical link with the London Chatham and Dover Railway (when it was known at St Paul's) and it received its current name in 1937 which is the name that most people now associate it with. It has over 12 million users in the station entry/exit statistics. I am from Cheshire East, but if Blackfriars is mentioned in railway parlance, I know exactly what is being discussed...and where.

Oddly, in the survey they didn't give Blackfriars or London Blackfriars as an option!! I still told them to keep the name as it is, and I hope everybody else took part and told them the same thing. I wonder though if these surveys are a bit like the BBC competitions were before they stoped them. Wasn't the original Blackfriars station on the south side of the river anyway?

If they got the funding and called it London Blackfriars - South Bank or any of the other alternatives, it gives the impression that its nowhere near Blackfriars underground. So it would have to be London Blackfriars - South Bank (for Blackfriars).

They'd be far better renaming City Thameslink to something more appropriate like Ludgate Hill , or St Pauls Thameslink (ironic sigh).

It was an Asian councilor who wanted to name it "Brick Lane" - which is right next to the station and is a haven for curry enthusiasts.

Naive question, I'm sure, but does this kind of thing really need a "consultation exercise"? Just call it "Blackfriars" or "Blackfriars & Bankside" and stop wasting money.

It's like the Cambridge island platform, which apparently "involved extensive consultation processes" to ensure that it was accessible to cyclists. The preferred option - to put in a groove at the edge of the steps (as per pretty much every German or Dutch station). I suspect this cost substantially less than the exercise itself (and common sense would say that it's an easy way to allow cycle access).

They don't need to change the name. They don't need to do a consultation. They don't need to spend any money at all on it.

When we have regions of the UK that are begging for additional stock and new trains, why is any public money at all being spent on this and that stupid cable car over the Thames?

Sorry for yet another bump today, but the chosen name is 'Blackfriars for Bankside and South Bank'. It will be displayed on the station's nameboards when it fully reopnes. Enjoy

Network Rail have this passion to destroy historical names and associations, hence the purge of Junctions and line names that have been around since the start of the Railway during resignalling schemes.

For example the Birmingham lines at Nuneaton, which have been known by that name since opening have had to be renamed the "Arley lines" for no seemingly good reason, likewise the "Leicester" lines became the Hinkley lines. :roll: :roll:

It is just a shame that Network Rail fails to discharge its primary function which is to run an effective and efficient railways infrastructure, and I think most people in the know would prefer a return to proper operational standards rather than pointless and uneccessary diversions along other avenues.
