New Moorgate stock

The opening of the Victoria Line happened before the line was converted to heavy rail. For years the line only ran between Drayton Park and Moorgate, using tube stock. The bigger tunnels were, apparently, part of the reason why the Moorgate crash was so bad- there was enough room for the carriages to ride up on top of each other.

I've read that the tube stock was moved between Drayton Park and Highgate depot using the branch through Crouch End.

No, of the new Movia stock, only the S7/S8 have air conditoning, the 2009TS has normal ventilators like previous tube stocks. The first tube stocks to (potentially) have it will be the NtFL units.

Ah I only wondered as I remember going on my first one a couple of summers ago and it was like a fridge, couldn't work out if it was A/C or just lots of cool air inside. I'd imagine it's better vents than, say, the 1972 stock, which is like an oven even with vents/windows open!

EDIT: Found the 2009TS TfL info sheet, it's the cab that's got air con, probably what I was thinking of

It was built by the GNR to full main line gauge of the day and carried underground trains of similar proportion and design to those of the then Metropolitan Railway.. only later was it used to extend the Northern Line and were tube size stock sent down the large tunnels

The use of tube stock in large tunnels made the 1970s Moorgate disaster much worse because tube carriages were able to override each other, increasing the damage by a significant factor.

What's the height from rail to roof of the northern city line tunnels I'm trying to prove to someone of SkyScraperCity that you can send any dual voltage EMU down (20m coaches) with no issue regarding the height.

I don't know that, but I think the only real issue is the length of carriages not the height.

Alas it was actually built by the Great Northern & City, who failed to reach an agreement with the GNR to run through services - hence the line terminated below Finsbury Park station.

Allegedly, the tunnel diameter is 16 feet.

Isn't the 2009 stock on the Victoria Line fitted with A/C? Or does it work differently?

As someone who uses the 2009s every day and has sweltered in suummer I can assure you the answer to your question re A/C is a definite NO!

Yeah, the new stock is still nice and hot - even on cold days when you'd be wearing a coat etc.

Thanks to various postings for the info regarding the Finsbury Park - Moorgate line. So the fact that its last days as an underground line were spent as part of the Northern line is a complete distraction. Rather it was envisaged in 1891 as a route to do (exactly ?) what was achieved in 1976. Tempting to extend it to Bank though.

I assume the attachment to the Northern Line was a hangover from the Northern Heights proposal which would have seen it extended to Alexandra Palace and Edgware taking over LNER branches, and to Bushey Heath with new construction. Put on hold at the start of WW2 and eventually abandoned when the Green Belt was adopted, leaving us with the Mill Hill East branch and various relics scattered across North London in interesting states of unfinishment.

There was also a proposal to extend south to Lothbury, which resulted in a few yards of excavation and left the tunneling shield in the end of one of the dead-ends at Moorgate.

I used it on Tuesday and it was very warm. Not unbearable, but still warmer than you'd like.
