Is there any link between the Buxton line and the Hope Valley line? I can remember the Liverpool - Norwichs calling at New Mills Newtown before Sheffield in the mid 90s. According to all maps I can find the is no link.

Could you be confusing New Mills Newton on the Buxton line with New Mills Central on the Hope Valley line?

There is a freight only line which allows freight from near Buxton to reach Northenden via Chinley avoiding Stockport and Manchester.

Such a service would have either involved turning back at Newtown and then again at Hazel Grove (and why would you do that?) or continuing on to Buxton, then around the freight only line through Millers Dale Junction, through Peak Forest, Dove Holes Tunnel and around the triangle at Chinley North junction to pick up the Hope Valley line.

This all sounds rather unlikely.

Hmm, all Manchester - Sheffield expresses have run via Hazel Grove since 1986. Before that the stopping service was only a New Mills Central - Sheffield service and expresses ran via Romiley and Marple. I don't believe any have called at Newtown.

I must admit I have to agree with the majority.. Liverpool to Norwich trains have not run via New Mills Newtown. Most ran along the Hazel Grove Chord when it opened and occasionally via Marple/New Mills Central during engineering works. New Mills Newtown is on a dead-end passenger line and the only trains that use the freight route at Chinley North are special excursions.
