The weather charts are showing some pretty concerning rainfall accumulated precipitation amounts over the next 48 hours. Widely 50 - 80mm for a wide coverage Central and Northern areas. Some isolated spots could receive over 100mm of rain.

Makes me wonder if this could scupper the recovery works?

The chart attached shows the ICON EU weather chart, showing rainfall totals of 50-80mm for Northern and Central areas, over a 48 hour timeframe.

NETWORK RAIL EMERGECY REPAIR UPDATE-
A letter has been distributed to residents living near the Hauge Bar works. A copy can be found below…

21 May 2024 T 03457 11 41 41

Reference (please provide this when calling): TTA1 173m 934yds to 173m 1617yds.

Dear neighbour,

Hague Bar and Hague Fold emergency embankment work

I am writing to update you on the emergency work taking place near your home at Hague Bar and Hague Fold.

I'd like to thank those if you who came to our drop-in information event on Thursday 9 May. Our team were very pleased to meet you and we hope we could answer some of your questions about the work.

As you may be aware, following recent emergency ground investigations, engineers have confirmed that work is required immediately to repair damage to the earth that supports the railway.

Engineers are working to stabilise the embankment in the Hague Bar and Hague Fold areas of New Mills until autumn. If the work is not carried out, there is a risk of 50,000 tonnes of earth falling from the railway into the River Goyt.

The team will be drilling pile foundations into the earth and building a wall between the railway and the river to stop the movement of the ground.

This will be carried out as quickly and efficiently as possible to minimise disruption to the community and to reopen the railway fully as soon as possible.

We are planning another meeting with the immediate residents of the work as suggested by your community at the event on 9 May. I will write to you again as soon as we have the details.

In the meantime, I would like to let you know more about what our work will look like, and what we are doing to try and reduce the disturbance you experience.

Current work plan
We expect the team to be on site until the end of September 2024.

Once our prep work to set up the compound is complete, the team will be working around the clock from the week commencing 27 May – week commencing 12 August 2024.

May - July
From next week (commencing 27 May), the team will be working at the Hague Bar site to construct a ‘contiguous pile wall’ which involves drilling pile foundations into to the ground to create a new retaining wall. We expect this part of the work to take until July to complete.

July - August
In July, the engineers will rebuild the embankment and install new track and ballast (railway stones) onto the railway. The team will also carry out the same work at the Hague Fold site during this time. This should take until the end of August.
September
In September there will be some monitoring work and finishing touches to complete before the compound is removed and the work will be finished.

Because this is an emergency situation, our programme could change as the work progresses. We will keep you regularly updated as much as possible.

What are we doing to reduce disturbance?

The team are doing everything they can to minimise the inconvenience to the community during the work.

We are installing sound barriers around noisy areas and equipment (such as generators) to keep noise to a minimum. The noise will be constantly monitored and is not expected to exceed 85 decibels.

Our scheme project manager, Vitesh, will be on site during office hours throughout the project, and will be happy to speak to you to address your specific concerns. We will do our best to help you as much as we can.

Are any trains running?

Manchester Piccadilly to Sheffield services are currently operating via Stockport calling at all stations between Chinley and Dore and Totley.

Manchester Piccadilly to New Mills Central services are operating using a single line between Marple and New Mills Central.

Marple continues to be served by up to three trains per hour – two from Rose Hill and one from Marple At peak times there are two trains an hour from Marple.

On Sundays, rail replacement buses are in operation between Piccadilly – Chinley via Marple. Sheffield trains divert via Stockport, as per weekdays.

The line will be closed for several weeks over the summer. We will share more information as soon as possible.

For more information about train services or rail replacement buses, please visit www.nationalrail.co.uk or www.northernrailway.co.uk.

Thank you again for your patience during this work. I will be in touch again soon to share more information about a meeting.

Please call our 24-hour helpline on 03457 11 41 41 if you have any queries in the meantime.

Kind regards,

Kate Burke

So, does this mean that any passenger trains wil be running beyond New Mills Central (towards Chinley / Sheffield) anytime soon?

They won't, probably not before late September. Even single line to New Mills Central may be suspended to get on with the job more quickly. Details will be being discussed with TOCs and probably FoCs. Diverted extra trains on lines through Stockport and congestion around the Hazel Grove chord challenge reliable timetabling.

And also have contributed to significant degradation of track quality on the Hazel Grove route.

Yes, over 2 inches of rain in past 24h at nearby Floodline rain gauge on River Sett that feeds the river at Hague Bar ... although river levels did not reach Flood Warning level overnight.

There appears to be a Network Rail announcement that 6 July to 25 August are the closure dates - seen on Facebook locally - at least we can now plan future journeys.

Engineers have been working around the clock in Hague Bar, New Mills, to stabilise the earth that supports the railway.

To carry out the work safely and quickly, the railway needs to be closed between Saturday 6 July until Sunday 25 August

Interesting bit of regulation the other day: from Manchester Picc we chose the xx48 stopper over a late-running EM Liverpool to Nottingham/Norwich service (due out at xx43), and we were held for it to overtake at Hazel Grove. The EM wasn’t further delayed, and the stopper clawed back from 5 late waiting at HG to only a couple of minutes late into Sheffield.
Didn’t realise the overtaking movement was possible at HG, but there it is on the track plan.

Happens quite a lot, the track layout at Hazel Grove is flexible and comes in very handy.

Interesting video of the ongoing works.

Earlier this year, after some of the wettest months on record, cracks were detected in this railway embankment in the Hague Bar area of Derbyshire along the line between New Mills Central and Manchester Piccadilly. In early April 2024, initial ground investigations were carried out at the site of the ground movement near to the tracks and Network Rail quickly confirmed that immediate emergency work was required to repair the slope that supports the railway. Lots of engineers and equipment are working here flat out 24/7 to stabilise the embankment. If the work is not carried out, there is a risk of 50,000 tonnes of earth falling from the railway into the adjacent River Goyt leaving the line closed for an even longer period.

More points problems at Hazel Grove today (albeit only affecting the Buxton line at present). Seems the infrastructure is struggling.

What, one DMU per hour? Is there a lot of freight that goes via Marple too?
The rerouting of the Sheffield stopper via Hazel Grove coincided with line speed increase from 40mph to 60mph. 1 extra train per hour is a 25% increase in passenger services from 4tph to 5tph, and the extra tph is at linespeed (not a stopper which wouldn't achieve 60mph anyway).

Initially the diverted hope valley stoppers weren't stopping at Hazel Grove, but I'm pretty sure they are now.

If it's faster trains causing the problems, then I would imagine that would be mostly down to the normal "fast" services taking advantage of the higher linespeed.

All Hope Valley stoppers are calling at Hazel Grove and Stockport.

Some freight services used to come via Marple but all from the west are now having to come via Hazel Grove.

An interesting fact has come to light as a result of the closure. Goyt Valley users going to Leeds normally have a more convenient journey by changing once in Sheffield rather than crossing Manchester. Journey time is usually slightly quicker too.

What's the latest on re-opening the route from New Mills Central towards Sheffield? The originally quoted "6 week closure" now seems to be nudging towards 6 months!

Network Rail were already saying “until the autumn” back in May. i suppose the latest hard date regarding train services was 25 August, unless that’s changed very recently.

But work alongside the railway could go on much longer, as an example with the embankment repair on the SWML near Hook there was still major work taking place around six months after full service was restored.

Heard it's slipped back from sources at Hazel Grove. To when is currently unclear.

However, I'm relishing the fast train from Manchester to Hazel Grove and I hope it's retained if even only every two hours, once the line through New Mills reopens.

Nothing on National Rail about any delays to reopening this morning their still saying to check back closer to the time for service details from next Monday.

Surely if the opening date has slipped it will still be business as usual at the moment with trains running via Stockport and Hazel Grove and buses between Marple and Chinley

To carry out the work safely and quickly, the railway now needs to be closed until 23 September.

Confirmation this afternoon from Network Rail, that the New Mills landslip works will continue into next month and the line will remain closed. Date is showing as 23rd as per initial rumours.

So 5 state of the art chambers have to be built.....something doesn't add up here.

1: These chambers have to be built, but hang on the issue has only just been identified .

2: It will last 120 years...brilliant but hang on, you discovered more complex issues. So how do you know it will last 120 years?

3: What was the complex issue? Everything about the landslip seems to be hush hush.

I don't really see what you are getting at here.

1. They identified the issue fairly recently and decided they had to build the chambers, which is what has caused the delay.
2. 120 year life is a typical contract requirement for civil structures. Clearly they might not if something unexpected happens such as the river undermining the earth that supports them.
3. I imagine it could be explained and probably will be in specialist publications, but wouldn't be very relevant to the typical journalist or reader of a press release.

It sounds like they've simply renewed the track drainage and made a song and dance about it. 5 catchpits is a length of around 150m.
