Has anyone figured out how to open the windows on the new Overland trains?
They seem to be sealed shut!

The trains are air conditioned, so why would anyone want to open the windows? I am pretty sure some can be in an emergency though, with a key.

Yes, like the windows on the 158s and other stock. Passengers are not meant to open them which is why they can only be opened with a T-Key.

Yeah, as Mojo said, the 378's have an A/C system. The trains have openable windows fitted but are only to be opened by staff, with a T or J key, for example if the A/C fails.

You leave yourself open to possible prosecution by using a t key to do so.

Under byelaw 11 no person may use or interfere with the train or any other equipment on the railway except if the equipment is intended for use by the passenger in that way.

If you need a t key the window is obviously not meant to be used by a passenger.

I do think some people completely fail to understand how air conditioning works. I've been in offices with openable windows and aircon - and people have the windows open because they say the 'air conditioning doesn't work'. Well, of course it doesn't work when it is trying to cool the outdoors too!

What good does opening a window on a hot day do anyway? Okay, at high speed the movement of air can help cool you - but in any other situation, you're just letting hot air in.

I have my own T key and so can open the windows at will. Although i`d probably get a bollocking for doing so.

You will most certainly not open a window on a 378 especially if im the conductor on the train, and you would get more than a bollocking as well.

Not even the staff are permitted to open the windows unless the air con has completely shut down and is unlikely to work. They dont call it Air Con anymore, they call it 'climate control'.

I have suggested to some bombardier staff that stickers explaining the window s are locked should be put above them, every day i get on one i have to explain to passengers that the windows are not meant to open as most people go to open them straight away.

Helps the air circulate? Often there will be a slight breeze

Moving air will cool you down, as long as you've got the movement of air on you - just like having a fan on. As the train moves, the windows probably help expel hot air more than taking air in - but when you're not moving, windows are next to useless. Air conditioning solves that, but it can't work when more and more hot air is coming in from an open window.

I think all trains (except perhaps low level tube trains) should be air conditioned. I also think all buses should be too, especially as it isn't that expensive or difficult to maintain.

It's actually the opposite that causes a problem with our Cl317/7's.

The windows on these really should have been sealed shut when they were fitted with A/C, but they weren't. Consequently, folk get on and immediately start opening them (the eejits). Then, as the train goes along, lots of lovely cool air comes in through the windows and hits the thermostats. The train then thinks "Hmm, it's a bit parky in here. I'll just put the heating on" irrespective of the actual ambient temperature. This then causes the temperature to rise and the punters to open more and more windows which just makes the problem worse.

I can usually guarantee that when a punter comes and complains that the train is too hot they will point to the carriage with all the windows open. I try and keep them shut as much as possible by going through the train at each terminus, but it's a thankless task because the punters just open them again. I've complained about it to Fleet as well, especially as the solution is actually very quick, simple and cheap (replace the hopper handles with metal clips), but nothing every seems to get done.

Quite frankly they do it to themselves. Let 'em fry.

You mean climate control. :)

Air conditioning usually refers to cooling, while climate control can cool, heat, filter and other things. But, for all intents and purposes it's the same thing.

I presume that the trains actually have the traditional heating elements at the lower sides of the train and only cool air comes out of the top vents? I've always wondered how this works together - presumably once the heat comes on, the aircon goes off? But, aircon also dries the air which stops windows misting up and condensation and dampness.

I guess the whole HVAC issue is quite complicated, especially with big changes of passengers and doors opening - so keeping the windows shut is even more vital!

The alternative is represented by the class 165/0. All windows sealed and no emergency ventilation. No problem whilst the air-con is working, but I was nearly laid out by a passenger once when it failed and conditions inside became oven-like.

I think in that case you have to either fail the entire unit or, if it's just one coach, lock it out of use. Control may take a dim view, but the decision ultimately rests with the traincrew.

I've failed trains for less before now.

I generally hate AC air, personally. I can completely understand why it's A Good Thing on trains (not least because of the energy saved vs drag from open windows), but it leaves the air dry, stale and complete with any smells that have been kindly added by loos or by fast food consumed on board.

Also, the noise from an open window usefully drowns out the tstststs from headphones that seems to permeate everywhere.

The trains seemingly want to become like aircraft interiors. Next inline will be pressurised cabins & seat belts :-?

Well they are now more or less built in the same way, so why not have the same interiors including the lovely airline hostesses to go with it ;)

Eh...?

Don't forget that I've been into your messroom at Stratford.

Aren't Voyagers/Pendolinos ever so slightly positively pressurised?

As for trains being built like planes- if anything they're being built like planes were a good thirty years ago (barring advances like friction stir welding)

I know and for a new messroom it is a bit claustrophobic, oh but we are not talking about the messroom are we?;) I was merely hoping we would have beautiful train hosteses at least i would be permantly occupied.

Air con does dry things out, but I am sure you can rehumidify it a little - and filter it to remove smells.

I guess there's a cost to everything, and basic air con is all we get.

Like the idea of hostesses though!

Keep hoping. I was just trying to work out which of your colleagues you thought might already fit the bill. The reason I mentioned your Stratford messroom is that I've seen at least a few of the contenders and I would have to say that none of them come even close.

Then again, we get a lot of the Ryanair lot on our trains. Some of them look pleasant enough I suppose, but they are a right miserable bunch. Faces like bulldogs licking wee off a nettle. *Shudders*

I'm all for 158 style windows, which can opened and closed only with a key. I've been on far too many journeys at a comfortable temperature, then somebody gets on and decides it's too hot or cold on board, and opens or closes windows. Ambient temperature should be maintained on board - this should be down to the train crews perception and feedback from passengers, not the decision of one single passenger.

I think I'd be miserable if I was working for O'leary. Reckon it's bad enough under normal circumstance, but having once been trapped at Birmingham on the plane for three and half hours on a flight from Newquay to Stansted I've also seen what they have to try and put up with when everything goes totally wrong.

(It's hardly wrong to go this far off topic in a discussion in the wrong folder is it?)
