New Lincolnshire Line Ideas

Hi, everybody!

Do any of these ideas sound viable in any way? They all revolve around building a railway to connect Horncastle and maybe Louth with the network.

- Building a junction with the Joint Line between Potterhanworth and Nocton. The line would travel east (possibly with a new combined station for Potterhanworth and Nocton here) towards Horncastle via Bardney. Developing to Louth should go via Horncastle or, if more viable, follow the old Bardney to Louth line.

- Building a new junction with the Joint Line just south of Metheringham and before the curve at Martin Road UWC. The line would travel East to Woodhall Spa (a fairly substantial village/town). From there, either a new alignment or the former line to Horncastle could be used. A further development to Louth should also be considered.

Although all would be beneficial, there are limitations and problems:
- Bridges or tunnels would have to be built at every road, unless an old alignment is used and the re-instatement of a level crossing can be justified (if there is no alternative).
- You would have to cross at least one major river, and a viaduct or other bridge would be costly.
- If using an old alignment, a hiking trail could be lost.
- Without demolishing properties, stations for Bardney, Horncastle and Woodhall Spa and Louth would have to be on the outskirts.

Anybody have any other ideas or think that this may be worth considering?

What market(s) are you proposing to serve by the connections to the Joint Line? Towards Lincoln or towards Sleaford?

As for crossing the Wolds, I think it's significant that Bardney to Louth closed to passengers in 1951, and that Horncastle to Louth will tomorrow according to Googlemaps have one (demand-responsive?) minibus departure.

Louth to Grimsby and Lincoln to Boston would IMO be less unlikely candidates for reopening.

PS before anyone asks, there is no direct bus from Louth towards Boston on the old GNR route.

Would reopening the Lincoln to Boston line be a good idea? It's now a popular cycle and walk route.
