New Job Offer Question

Hi everyone

A couple of months ago I applied for a few jobs (station assistant), all the same work but at different locations. I’m very grateful to have received a job offer for one of them.

However the same job but at the preferred closer location to my home has asked me to attend an interview, even though I have accepted (just waiting on doing medical) the other offer.

In people’s opinion, would it be risky if I attended the interview? I wouldn’t want to jeopardize my current offer. Or should I go ahead with the offer I have and ask for a transfer after the probation period?

At the end of the day the choice is yours and we can only offer our opinion.

As a lot of people will say any foot in the door for the Railway is a step in the right direction, it takes some people many years and many attempts to get a career.

Think about how you would feel if you went for an interview at the preferred station and if you didn’t get it, how would you feel potentially passing up the opportunity?

Again it really depends on your own personal circumstances, take your time to think about it and consider all the avenues.

I don't think transferring is a thing on the railway, if you want to move you'll have to wait for a vacancy then apply for it.

However I'd consider speaking to HR as the same manager might be responsible for both of your locations and he/she might be amenable to just swapping them around for you.

Is the interview at a different company? If so then you would in no way be jepoardising your current offer - up to you if you still want to follow through. Depend on timing, you can 'stall' the company you have an offer for, but that's not without risk. HR processes can be quite slow so if there's only a week or two between them, hopefully you are OK.

You wouldn't be able to transfer, especially across companies.

The interview is at the same company, different locations. Starting date for my current offer is provisionally June, but this interview is at the end of the month, probably hearing back week after.

Absolutely I agree with you. If I say didn’t get an offer for the preferred station, I would still fully take the current role I was offered

I am slightly surprised the company has not connected the dots then yet. I would suggest contacting HR/Recruitment as soon as you can in this regard as it might be different hiring managers / station groups are involved and they are not aware.

It definitely will not; you've already passed the grade and are going for a medical soon and it's much more hassle for the company to start the process again.

Agreed here. They won’t want to reinterview you. If there’s a station closer to home for you, and another candidate able to be offered the location you’ve currently been offered, they may even be able to avoid the whole recruitment process.

Transferring between locations within the same company is usually pretty straight forward, assuming there are vacancies.
