New High Speed Rail

The new High Speed Rail which will be called High Speed 2 and in rail the title is London to Birmingham just 45 minutes - by HS2

Interesting. Several questions, though...

1) Will they use the existing route or build a new one?
2) Will they use Pendolinos or order more Javelin trains?
3) If this goes ahead, will it be later extended further north, to Manchester, Carlisle and Glasgow?
4) The scary one - how much will it cost?

They are bulding new lines which are from St Pancras to Glasgow, Edinburgh, Liverpool, Birmingham and Manchester.
From Europe to Heathrow, Birmingham, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Manchester.
some of the lines will be the existing lines north of Birmingham

I think it is fairer to say that they want to build it, not that they are. The funding, planning and political obstacles will not be easily overcome.

I'd love to see UK getting some high sped rail like the rest of Europe, but it won't happen. UK governments are not rail-minded, and the cost per mile of high speed rail is many times that in, say, France. This is because the UK is far more crowded so land is expensive and open obstacle-free routes don't exist, and the nimby factor makes UK planning far more protracted and expensive.

It can done - HS1 shows that. But it's so expensive I can't ever see any UK government comitting the money to make it happen.:cry:

The annoying thing is, though, the hundreds of thousands of pounds each year held by numerous rail authorities which is not spent, that could be used on development but isn't!

I can see this not happening for at least 10 - 15 years. Politicians will all have the 'Green' Policy where everyone should travel by High Distance Rail, where in a few months that policy will be ditched because of Money.

Rather than wasting all that money on proposing and planning, I'd rather see it funding straight into Network Rail or even VT to fund extra Pendolino Cars, ROSCOs I doubt will exist much longer...

1) I think theyre thinking of buulding a new one, using existing railway to north pole junction, up to northolt then building a new (and more direct route) to bham following the M40.

2) New TGV style duplex trains (very similar to ones on the TGV-est) might be ordered for this. St Pancras is built to support them as well as bog standard TGV / Eurostar trains

3) From reading recently in 'Rail' magazine, in later years this could be extended to Manchester and Scotland.

4) Lots..!

well it's certainly possible, i've heard bits and bobs about it. big article in Rail magazine recently. i know nothing's certain..but it's a possibility!

I'd like to see it, but it won't happen probably because of our government. Maybe in a while, but not in this timescale.

I'm sorry, but to a certain extent the railway is on it's arse due to lack of funding. Where the hell is money going to come from to build brand new rail lines to B'ham, manchester and Scotland...?
