Curious as to how much effort this would require:
Alexandra Dock is now almost entirely coated with imported cars, all of which are transported by road. How could it be transferred onto rail?
Quite easily probably, the alignment still exists into the dock, and by the looks of it, doesn't need that much of repair (except of course being reclaimed from nature!) and there's enough space to construct a loading ramp.

(excuse my awful drawing skills) (arrows show where imported cars go to be loaded)

This'll probably go nowhere, but it's a nice "what if more companies liked trains" situation.

The real problem is that imported cars tend to go to a diffuse range of destinations so there is no flow or axis suitable for trainload operation.

A great amount of effort was expended by RfD successfully to obtain automotive traffic through the Channel Tunnel. Imports: FIAT Livorno to Avonmouth, PSA various French factories to Corby, BMW from various German factories, VW to Doncaster (for VW's Sandtoft distribution centre) . Exports Land-Rover to Italy. Ford components from Spain on Transfesa container wagons.
The importers generally had a single UK primary distribution base.

Where did it all go after EWS took over?
