Just to scratch an old sore, I noticed that Manchester Airport P4 was sitting unused today.
It was barriered off at the buffers end. Trains were doubling up in P3 as usual.
General shortage of trains today with several TP/NT turning round short at Piccadilly because of "points failure" somewhere, Longsight I think.
One 319 vanished off realtimetrains at Ordsall Lane, presumable went to Victoria instead.
There was a reduced service on the Piccadilly to Airport and Stockport lines until late evening on 3rd August due to emergency engineering works. Cleethorpes to Airports were being terminated at Piccadilly and Southport to Airports at Oxford Rd. I was on one of the latter and the Airport-bound holidaymakers were faced with the choice of trying to cram their enormous bags on to the 185 from Windermere or lug them from Oxford Road Platform 4 to 3 for the double 156 from Blackpool. I did not hang around to hear the cursing!

Today, no fourth platform in use but could have done with it. Very heavy use of platforms with doubling up. Very frustrating.

I see MEN have confirm that Airport new fourth platform will be opening in Autumn now.

Manchester Airport rail station's fourth platform completed ahead of schedule

The fourth railway platform at Manchester Airport is complete - and should be ready for passengers by the autumn.

The upgrade – which will allow extra services to call at the airport and provide passengers with better access from across the north of England - is part of the Northern Hub, a £1bn investment in the railway in the north.

Work to complete the new platform resumed in January for the installation of track, signalling, and platform upgrades.

A spokeswoman for Network Rail said: “Work to complete the new platform at Manchester Airport was completed in May 2015, ahead of schedule. The final authorisations are being completed and it is anticipated the new platform will be available for passenger use by the autumn. This is having no impact on train services in and out of the station “

No wasnt meant to be completed until late next year, but since the Metrolink contractor got the bulk of work was done to coincide with Metrolink opening.

Different sources gave different completion dates. Originally it was said to be due in 2016, I think. But the project was brought forward to reduce disruption to Metrolink. When George Osborne visited in Feb 2014 there was a press release saying it was due by the end of 2015. But the last revision of the CP5 Enhancements Delivery Plan said March 2015.

I now understand from a rail industry source that platform 4 at MIA is to open on 20th June and that the ATW service will run through to the Airport from the December timetable change.

Not sure how paths have become available but we will wait and see.

Currently NOT in Open Train Times Database for December 2015 timetable.

The contractors already working on the Metrolink works suddenly started also working on the foundations and side walls of NR platform 4 (the other side of which is the Metrolink spare platform) about July 2013. Later they put a canopy over it. Then in March 2014 they did the second round of works to the bridge under Outwood Lane. Those were the works that really benefited Metrolink by being done before Metrolink opened in November 2014, and would have caused huge disruption to Metrolink if they had been done after it was open. The 2015 NR works - tracks, points, OLE and signalling - could be done with minimal disruption to Metrolink.

Noticed on OTT that the Barrow/Blackpool/Southport trains don't have a platform allocation after December timetable change all others do. These trains currently use 3b. Could these be using 4 from the timetable change?

I note there's a 319 in P4 this morning. Doesn't appear to be in service though.

Don't take any notice of OTT for December at this stage. The Timetable is still being prepared, ECS, Shunts and platforming come last. See what it says in a couple of months time.

Platforming shouldnt come last, it should be done as part of validation or you end up offering paths that dont work at terminal stations. The TOCs would soon put strong words in the offer responses.

Perhaps I should have phrased it differently by saying what should be in the
public domain should have priority. I do understand these things as I have been a Train Planner myself. Re the question posed about the usage of Platform 4, it could be, but not recognised in all systems yet. Let ne quote a local example, about 2 years a new Bay Platform opened in Caerphilly and was numbered Platform 1 and Platform 1 re-numbered to 3. If you look at OTT and RTT it will be seen that Up trains (Platform 3) are still ewn a Platform as if it doesn't exist in Network Rail data. Perhaps a similar situation with Platform 4 at the Airport.

Correct in all regards, and construction of the key driver for needing a fourth platform (the Ordsall Chord) has only just started anyway.

MIA P4 was work package B of the inner part of Northern Hub, sandwiched between Chord (A) and Piccadilly / Oxford Road (C).

According to the Northern press office the Airport service was supposed to be a 319 from the timetable change.
;
a) can anyone confirm it happened
b) if so has anyone noted a 323 on a previous diesel turn?

I was on a 319 today on that diagram so it has definitely happened!

Re (b): The 0715 Macclesfield to Piccadilly is still pathed as a DMU, but has been operated by a 323 since the timetable change. The preceding ECS move to MAC Platform 3 is now from Longsight and pathed as a 323.

This service used to be formed from a pair of 142s (which came ECS from Stockport carriage sidings) on the occasions I saw it - they have presumably been redeployed for strengthening other services.
